The Wingham R yals
weathered some heavy going
fOlios!`.6.t? 8-6 victory over St.
Clements in a stiff encounter
last Friday night, extending
their undefeated record to
seven games.
The Royals jumped into an
early 5-0 lead in the game,
but then required three
third -period goals to clinch
'the win after St. Clements
had battled back to tie the
score at 5-5.
As in previous encounters
with St. Clements, there was
a steady parade to the
penalty boxes. St. Clements
was on -the receiving end of
14 of the 27 citations handed
out, with Wingham called for
13. The only major penalty in
the match was a high -
sticking call against
Wingham goaltender Brian
O'Connell in the second
peiod, but there were more
t lance f calls for roughing
during the course of the
game, ost going against St.
Clements.
O'Connell, in ' just his
second start for the Royals
this season, quickly found
himself in the thick of the
fray as St. Clements
crowded the goal crease all
evening, producing a series
of penalties to the goaltender
and his defencemen as they
tried to clear them out.
O'Connell was fingered for
three calls, including the
major, with defencemen
Mike. Watson and Pete
Goodall each picking up a
- couple of trips to the penalty
box as a result of their ef-
forts on his behalf.
Ken Cousins continued to
lead the Royals on the
scoreboard, with a pair of
goals and two assists to add
tohis already impressive
total. Captain Dave.
Stephenson also had a pair of
goals, with the othersgoing
to Sandy Fitzgerald, Dave
Golley, Jay MacLaurin and
Len Stainper. Mark Foxton
had three assists in the
game.
Wingham got off to a good
start, taking a 3-0 lead in the
first period on a couple of
goals by Cousins and one by
Stephenson. Fitzgerald and
Golley then tallied in the
second period to give the
Royals a comfortable 5-0
edge by the midway point.
However, three quick goals
by St. Clements during the
latter half of the period, two
of them power -play markers
scored during the major
penalty to O'Connell, and
two more during the first
five minutes of the third
period left the teams on even
terms with 15 minutes to go
in the game.
Despite the setback, the
Royals refused to give up
and as during previous
games this season even-
tually the discipline and hard
work paid off. Stephenson's
second goal of the night,
from Brian Ten Pas, with
11:06 left in the match put
the Royals back in front 6-5.
MacLaurin's goal, from
Stamper, three minutes later
was the eventual winner,
giving Wingham a 7-5 lead,
and Stamper's goal on a
power play with 3:34
showing on the clock
provided some breathing
room.
St. Clements scored a last-
` gasp goal, a short-handed
effort with 1:14 remaining; to
make the final score 8-6, but
couldn't come any closer.
With the win, the Royal
record is now 5-0-2 heading
