Bears try for -firsts ;• t
in Blyth broomball league
The Blyth Bears continued
their climb to one of the top
spots in the Blyth Broomball
League last week as they
remained in fourth place, but
moved to within one point of
first.
The Bears have lost three
games this year and only one
of those defeats hag come in
regulation time. The team's
strong showing this year is
due to a balanced scoring
attack in which eight players
have shared in the team's 15
goals. Also defensively the
Bears have allowed only
seven goals in regulation
play in seven games.
Last Tuesday evening the
Bears took on the undefeated
Lucky Devils. The two teams
played to a scoreless draw in
regulation time, due mainly
to the outstanding goal-
tending displayed by the
Bears' Kevin Falconer.
The Devils took a 1-0 lead
in overtime as the league's
'top scorer,',Rodger Forsyth,
connected for the game
winner with the assist going
to John Beadle. An insurance
goal by Beadle from Mike
Schumacker gave the Devils
their 2-0 victory.
Last Thursday evening the
Bears got single goals from
Steve Cook, John Bird. and
Larry Sowerby to post a 3-0
shutout over the Clinton
Warriors. Gary Nicholson
picked up two assists for the
Bears while Terry-Sowerby
added one.
In further action last
Tuesday evening Randy
Boyer set up Richard Miller
for the game's only goal as
the Goderich Oarsmen
slipped past the Warriors 1 Q,
Glenn McLean posted the
Oarsmen's first shutout this
year.
Yvonne Cronyn recorded
her third shutout this season
as the Auburn Ladies pulled
off a 1-0 triumph over
Brussels. Marg Foran
scored the Auburn marker
early in the second frame,
with the assist going to Betty
Bromley.
The Lanesville Lords, led
.by Jim Van Osch's two goals
and one assists knocked off
the Blyth Inn Bandits 5-0.
Duke Drennan and Steve
Howard added a goal and an
assist each, while Ian
Hackett added one goal and
Greg Hackett and Shawn
Drennan had one assist each.
Lori Hesselwood con-
nected for four goals last
Thursday evening to lead the
Blyth Baintoneers to a 6-0
victory over Yogi's Girls.
Becky Hamm picked up a
goal and two assists for the
winners, while Marg Kroes
netted one goal and Joanne
Reinhardt, Shivon Youngblut
and Judy Mason collected
one assist apiece.
The Eighth Liners grabbed
a 2-0 first -period lead,
however they needed a goal
with 12 seconds 'left in the
game to defeat the Lakelet
Hornets 3-2. Herb Govier
scored two goals, including
the game -winner for the
Eighth Liners. Gordon
Machan added a goal and an
assist and Arnold Pease had
two assists.
For the Hornets, Phil
Black picked up one goal and
an assist, while Doug deBoer
had one goal and Ron deBoer
an assist.,,,,
Sheila Walker set up Jane
Vath for the game's only
goal as Lucknow edged the
Goderich Harborlites 1-0. It
was Sheila Hunter's sixth
shutout of the season.
Second -period goals by
Brian Argyle and Roy Fisher
lifted the Auburn Falcons to
a 2-0 win over the Goderich
Oarsmen. Single assists in
the game went to Allan
McWhinney and. Terry_
Powell.
P.S. Congratulations to the
Lucknow ladies broomball
team which lost 1-0 to the
Competition Cougars in the
"A" championship game of
the Palmerston tournament.

Heibein scores three
in Toss to Listowel
The Wingham Legion Pee
Wees played Listowel in
Wellington -Perth league
competition on Sunday,
coming out on the short end
of a 13-6 score.
Wingham kept it close for
the first half of the game,
with the score tied 4-4
midway through the second
period. However outbursts
by Listowel in the latter half
of the second period and
again in the third put the
game out of reach.
Chris Heibein opened the
scoring just 1:32 into the first
period to give Wingham a 1-0
lead, scoring unassisted.
After Listowel had come
back to tie it five minutes
later, Wingham's Anesh
Bodasing restored the lead,
scoring from Peter Poulin.
However Billy Helmka's sec-
ond goal of the period pulled
Listowel into a tie again by
the end of the period.
In the second period,
Wingham again went ahead
on a quick goal by Heibein,
assisted by Poulin. Listowel
came back 'o tie on a goal by
Rodney Hamilton and then
went ahead on Rick Smith's
goal, but Heibein scored his
third goal of the game,
assisted by Todd Harrison,
to knot the score at four.
A four -goal outburst by
Listowel to end the period
made the score 8-4 a'td
although Wingham scored
twice early in the third,
Poulin and Dean Tolton
getting the goals, that was as
close as they would come.
Listowel sounded in five
more goals by the end of the
period to make it 13-6.
In a game against Palmer-
ston the previous day, the
Pee Wees kept it close but
gave up three unanswered
goals in the third period to
lose 5-3.
Wingham got on the
scoreboard first, jumping
into a 2-0 lead in the first
period on a pair of goals by
Anesh Boadasing assisted by
Heibein and with Jason
Balzer also drawing an
. assist on the first goal.
Palmerston responded with
a goal by Mark Durban. to
make it 2-1 at the end of the
period.
A goal by Peter Poulin,
assisted by Bodasing and
Heibein, restored Wing -
ham's two -goal bulge in the
second, before Jason Ronald
scored to make it 3-2.
However that was all the
goals Wingham would get,
while Palmerston got goals
in the • third from Chad
Sperian and a pair from Max
Lemieux to grab a 5-3 vic-
tory.
.Trevor Elmslie was in the
nets for Wingham in both of
the games.

Ir.nmen are victorious
in Walkerton Li3=2:‘,0abit
By Peter Bauer
The Wingham Ironmen
emerged with a 9-7 victory
over the Black Hawks in
Walkerton last Friday night
after a shootout. It obviously
was a goaltender's night-
mare with a total of 16 goals
scored in the contest,
boosting an already -swollen
goals against average for the
duo of Rob Schistad (5.2
goals against) and Pat
Chambers (6.08).
Chambers and Walkerton
netminder Paul Stever had
their shaky moments as far
as their own performances
were concerned and their
problems were manifested
by a somewhat suspect
defence as apparently both
clubs decided to throw
caution to the wind.
Having said that, the two
clubs did not produce much
.in 'tliie way of offence in the
opening stanza as the
Ironmen emerged with a 2-0
lead.
Chambers seldom was.
tested, having to make three
stops while his teammates
allowed him a two -goal lead.
Jeff Espensen opened the
scoring for Wingham after
Kevin Coultes carried the
puck down the right wing. He
spotted Espensen at the
opposite point and his low
shot found the mark, beating
Stevers who appeared
screened on the shot.
Espensen set up the next
goal as he lugged the puck
down the right side, circled
the netand then fed Troy
Pocaluyko on the goalmouth.
Pocaluyko's first shot was
Howick 6, Milverton
Wheeler and Livermore
led Howick to a 6-0 triumph
over Milverton in an
exhibition game last
Saturday evening. Wheeler
had a hat trick (his secondf
the season), while Live
more had two goals and an
assist fora three-point night.
Aaron Stewart scored
final Howick goal on a neat
pass from John Tritten.
Dennis Wintemute and
Darren Brown mane several
key saves to earn their
second shutout of the season.
Howick 6, Tiverton ►
Livermore scored three
goals and assisted on two
others to lead Howick to its
third successive league
victory Sunday night.
Other Howick goal scorers
were Tritten, Stewart and
Trevor Smith who scored his
first goal of the season in the
6-1 effort for Howick.
blocked, but he managed to
slap the rebound by Stever.
Chambers played his best
period of the contest in the
middle frame and made 10
stops with two big saves and
maintained the Ironmen's
two -goal lead with the clubs
emerging from the second
with the Ironmen on top by a
4-2 margin.
Dave Gamble scored his
first of two goals for the
evening early in the period,
drilling one from the left
faceoff circle.
Jim Crawfof~d put the
Hawks on the scoreboard at
the 5:57 mark as the team
returned to full strength.
Two Ironmen defencemen
were stranded at the
Wingham blueline when the
puck carrier was decked.
Crawford picked up the loose
puck and beat Chambers
easily on the one-on-one
break.
Gamble restored the three -
goal lead with a goal that
appeared to be instant
replay of his first effort, but
before the end of the period
the Hawks made it 4-2. With
the defence backing up, Paul
Snodgrass was allowed to
skate into the slot. His shot
beat the glove hand of
Chambers who had, no
chance on the shot.
The third period saw a
complete breakdown in de-
fence and an apparent lack
of concentration by th . net -
minders who, up until' then,
had played splendidly at
both ends.
The Hawks tied the score
less than eight minutes into
the final period on goals by
Terry Hoehn and Sean
Bradley, but a powerplay
effort and two shorthanded
goals in a two -and -a -half
minute span put the Ironmen
ahead 7-4.
Coultes poked in his own
rebound after Stever had
rude the initial save on the '
opposite side of the crease.
Brett Cameron did his magic
number on a breakaway,
deking Stever to the ice then
firing the puck into the open
side.
Coultes netted his second
of the night by swatting the
puck by the helpless net -
minder while he was flat on
the ice.
Steve Nicholson scored his
second goal in as many
games on a deflection at the
goalmouth. Cameron added
to the Ironmen total on
another one-on-one for the
final Ironmen goal.
Wedged in between the last
two Ironmen goals was a
Walkerton tially by Craw-
ford. Dan McFadden round-
ed out the scoring for Black
Hawks, finding the mark
with only three seconds left
to play.
The Ironmen travel to
Hanover this Friday to take
on the powerful Barons
squad, which remains un-
defeated. They will have to
shore up defensively and the
goaltending will have to bear
down to come away with a
win. Clinton will be in town
for a 2:30 p.m. Sunday start
as the two clubs battle for
second place.
Wingham Optimist Tykes
are still looking for a win
The Wingham Optimist
Tykes hosted Brussels
earlier this month and
suffered a 5-3 loss. Wingham
met a fast -skating Brussels
team, led by Matthew Lee,
which had the local boys in a
bind with the score 3-0 at the
end of the first period.
Wingham came out flying
in the second with a pair of
goals from the line of Brett
Sangster, Ryan Leibold and
Steven Anger with Sangster
scoring twice to draw the
game closer. However Lee
came back for Brussels to
end the period at 4-2.
The third period saw
Brussels and Wingham swap
goals. Sangster added his
third marker to end the
game at 5-3. Travis Baier,
Jeremy Brown and Jamie
MacKay were thorns in the
Brussels' side throughout the
game and Shawn Gedcke
played a strdng game as
goal tender by stopping
several breakaways.

Blues defeat Tiverton
in hard-fought match
By Jane Vath
The Wingham Inter-
mediate Ladies' team, the
Blues, defeated the defen-
ding WOAA champions, the
Tiverton Big Red, Sunday by
a 3-1 score.
. The Blues traveled to
Tiverton with only eight
players, including their
goalie, against a full com-
pliment of Tiverton players.
Things went well for
Wingham in the first period
and from then on the local
team never looked back. A
scramble in front of the
Tiverton net resulted in a
goal for Jane Vath, assisted
by Eileen O'Donoghue.
Up by a lone goal in the
second, the Blues let
themselves get into trouble
since it was hard to tell
which was the penalty box
and which was the players'
box later in the game
because there were two
players in each.
Lots of hustle and drive got
the Blues out of this one
though as they roared back.

thir efiding the game in a 3-

BLUE LINES—The Blues
were not intimidated by
Tiverton's full roster as they
arose to the challenge,
proving to themselves they
were prepared for the tough
match after all the hard
work of practices really paid
off.
Without Esther Nethery
between the pipes the score
might have been a lot closer
as she played an excellent
game and so did Eileen
O'Donoghue who racked up
three points for herself.
The Blues play their next
home game this Saturday

4 score suggests.
Jeremy Creeden saw his
first action between the
pipes as he' faced and
stopped many Blyth
shooters. Sangster scored
twice for Wingham and
single markers were added
by Liebold and Anger.
Josh Johnston and Mark
Gibson pushed the. puck
relentlessly up and down
their respective wings,
feeding the puck to fast -
skating Peter Gusso, but
Blyth's strong Michael
Bromley proved too much
for the Wingham boys.
In spite of the loss each boy
on the Wingham team may
be proud of his effort.
BLYTH 5, WINGHAM 4
A much -improved defen-
sive club showed Blyth last
Wednesday that they are no
pushovers. Good defensive
play from Peter Shaw, Neil
Mowbray, Chad Creeden, Ja-
son Crawford, Jason Moody,
Jason Evans and Patrick
McGee pushed Blyth's high -
scoring offence away from
the front of the net. j
Wingham's Sangster scor-
ed late in the first period,
assisted by Anger . for the
only goal of the first. Sang-
ster scored again mid -way
through the second to give
Wingham a 2-0 lead, but
Blyth came back with two
unanswered goals to tie the
game later in the second.
However Wingham wasn't
finished yet as Baier
slammed in a goal just
before the period ended to
make the score 3-2 and
produce a sigh of relief when
period two was over.
Blyth opened the scoring in
the third and seconds later
Sangster, Gibson and Anger
connected again with Sang-
ster increasing Wingham's
lead to 4-3. However Blyth
scored two unanswered
goals to end the game at 54
for Blyth.
The Wingham team is
asked to "Keep up the good
work! ".
