Janet Amos learned a lot
about small-town theatre
when she was artistic'
director at the Blyth
Festival. She learned that
lovers of small-town theatre
have different tastes than
the city fan. She also learned
that if she did not provide
this kind of quality,
audiences just would not
come. Some people were
even rude enough to walk out -
during a performance.
At her new job as artistic
director at Theatre New
Brunswick, Amos is ap-
plying all the things she has
learned about theatre. In an
area of the country that is
generally conservative and
down-to-earth when it comes
to tastes in entertainment,
she is planning accordingly
and hopes to make a suc-
cessful first .season in '85,
with some of her Blyth hits
like "I'll Be Back Before
Midnight" and "Country
Hearts". She will add a
home-grown touch, with a
comedy written by a
Fredericton radio an-
nouncer, and her big musical
will be an adaptation of
Charles Dickens' "Christ-
mas Carol".
Artistic Director Ron
Ulrich of the Huron Country
Playhouse at Grand Bend is
also learning a lot about his
audiences. Attendance was
down last summer, partly
because people did not like
all the choices of plays
staged there. Many theatre-
goers do not appreciate
dialogue laced with sexual
innuendoes and foul
language. And take away the
large-scale musical with
familiar songs and the
proverbial' happy ending,
and you also lose a large
portion of your audience.
With that in mind, Ulrich
has planned his 1985 season•
and it is lookin' good! He is
bringing two musicals to the ,
Playhouse stage - the first
Canada's own "Anne of
Green . Gables" which was
written by Don Harron and
Norman Campbell, based on
the novel, by L. M. Mont-
gomery, and for many years
a hit on the stage of the
Charlottetown Festival. It
will run from June 28 to July
20. .
The second big musical, a
repeat of the Playhouse and
their most requested
production, is Rodgers and
Hammerstein's "The Sound
of Music". Everyone loves
this story about the famous
Von Trapp family and the
beautiful music, like "My
Favorite Things", "Climb
Every Mountain" and the
title song. It will end the
season, playing from August
20 to September 7.
Between these two top
draws, the Playhouse will
present two comedies.
"Move Over, Mrs.
Markham" will be presented
from July 23 to August 3 and
"Star Spangled Girl", which
ran for months on Broadway
with Sandy Duncan in the
title role, will be a ,popular
Neil Simon play, running
from August 6 to August 17.
Productions on . the
Playhouse II stage and other
events at the Grand Bend
theatre will be announced at
a later date.
