Royals tie Ripley 5-5
to keep their streak alive
The Wingham Royals kept
their undefeated streak alive
with a last-minute goal to
snatch a 5-5 tie against
Ripley Sunday night in
WOAA Intermediate A
hockey. -
It is the second time in as
many meetings this season
that Wingham and Ripley,
who met for the overall
league championship last
season with Ripley emerging
on top, have played to a
deadlock. In the season
opener at Wingham Oct. 26,
the Royals came back to tie
the score at 4-4.
Sunday night at Ripley,
with the goalie pulled for an
extra attacker, Brian Ten
Pas scored on a blast from
the blueline ' with just 20
seconds showing on the
clock. It was a fitting con-
clusion to a classic, wide-
open match, with few
penalties, and marked
another strong come -back
effort by the young Royals.
Only 10 penalties were
assessed in ,the match, all
minors, with six going
against Wingham. However
the Royal special teams
turned in another sterling
performance, holding the
high-powered Ripley attack
to just one power play goal
while scoring two them-
selves on four advantages.
Veteran goaltender Ron
Smith, who watched from
the bench on Friday night
while highly -touted
newcomer Brian O'Connell
made his debut for the
Royals in a 13-3 shellacking
of Monkton, was back in the
nets against Ripley and
turned in another steady
game, holding Wingham in
the match with big saves at
critical moments,

The Howick Juniors
romp over Markdale
The Howick Juniors
returned to Markdale last
weekend for their second
visit of the season and out-
scored the home team 14-4.
Howick opened early with
two goals. The first goal was
scored by Dorren Foerter,
assisted by Jeff and Greg
Douglas. The second marker
was scored by Greg Douglas
and assisted by Jack
Scholten and Jeff Fisk.
Scott Norman then scored
two unassisted goals before
Mark Leslie put Howick
ahead by five after a pass
from Dan Hill and Rob
Drost.
Second period action saw
Howick's Hill put it by the
Markdale goalkeeper after
getting some help, -from
Drost •and Jeff Douglas.
`Following Markdale's first
marker of the game, Greg
Douglas hit the twine again,
this time assisted by
Scholten.

note after taking a pass from
David Harding and Norman.
Howick opened the third
period with three more
goals, chalking up a hat trick
for Norman. His first goal of
the period came on an from
McDougall and Harding.
Drost then put the Howick
team ahead by one more on
an unassisted effort before
Norman tallied again after
being set up by Hill.
The Markdale team then
potted three quick markers
to put a scare into the
Howick squad. However
Howick returned with two
more goals of its own: Greg
Douglas from Scholten and
Hill and Leslie from Greg
Douglas.
Greg Douglas potted his
third goal after being set up
by Scholten and Fisk.
The Howick squad travels
to Arthur this Friday night to
meet the Eagles for the first
time this year. The Har-
vesters from Grand Valley
make their first trip to
Howick this Sunday at 2 p.m.

blueline since moving up to
the Royals this season from
the Wingham Ironmen,
opened the scoring at 5:43 of
the first period on a power
play goal set up by Ken
Cousins and Jay MacLaurin.
That proved to be the only
scoring in the period. In the
second, however, Ripley
roared back with three
straight goals to take a 3-1
lead. Paul Wilkens evened
the count at 5:36 of the period
and then, with under four
minutes to go, Mike Pollock
and Brian Regier struck for
goals just 21 seconds apart to
take the lead.
Not to be outdone, the
Royals promptly took ad-
vantage of a hooking penalty
against Regier to make it
close again, Ten Pas scoring
from MacLaurin just five
seconds into the penalty.
Returning to the ice in the
third period trailing 3-2,
Wingham fell further behind
when Kevin Stewart found
the mark at 5:50. But again
goals by MacLaurin, set up
by Stephenson, and Cousins,
assisted by Tom Irwin, just
1:11 apart propelled the
Royals into a 4-4 tie.
That was short-lived, as
Wilken struck again less
than two minutes later with a
power play goal which gave
Ripley a 5-4 lead. However,
with a tenacity which is
becoming their trademark,
the Royals battled back.
With time ticking away and
Smith on the bench, the
combination of Ten Pas and
Cousins, which has come
through in the clutch for the
Royals in nearly every
game, clicked again for the
tying marker. MacLaurin
also assisted on the goal to
pick up his fourth point of the
night.
The tie gives the Royals a
record of 4-0-2 and 10 points
heading into this weekend's
action. They play their only
game on the road this
weekend, traveling to St.
Clements Friday night for an
8:00 o'clock start. Their next
home game will be a
rematch with the Lucknow
Lancers Nov. 23 at 8:30 p.m.
Although they have yet to
meet St. Clements, Drayton
or Woodford this season, the
Royals have served clear
notice that they will be one of
the teams to be reckoned
with in the WOAA league.
Making their record even
more remarkable is the fact
that this is a rebuilding year
for the team, which had a
highly successful season last
year. Nearly half the team
and almost the entire
blueline corps are rookies in
Intermediate competition.
As a result, the team has yet
to reach its peak, with Coach
Bill Kerr juggling lines in an
attempt to achieve con-
sistency.
Ripley, by contrast, is
almost unchanged from the
team which won the WOAA
Intermediate title last
season.
Howick Peewees
on winning streak
The Howick WOAA Pee
Wee team increased its
record to two wins and no
losses in league play by
defeating Lucknow 6-4 last
Friday evening.
Steve Gibson led the
Howick attackwith two
goals and two assists. Other
Howick goal scorers were.
John Greig, Jaret
Henhoeffer, Jason Douglas
and Robbie VanDenBroek.
Jayson Potts, Phillip
Livermore, Andrew Weber,
Steve MacGregor, Henhoef-
ffer, Oliver Tritten and Van-
DenBroek earned assists on
good passing plays.
Last Saturday evening,
Tritten led Howick to a 12-2
exhibition win over Mild-
may. Tritten's hat trick and
three assists added to the
win.
His linemate Greig had
two goals and one assist,
while Phillip Livermore and
Gibson also had two goals.
Single markers went to
Donald Livermore, Potts
and VanDenBroek. Goal -
tenders Peter Stewart and
Mark Fraser allowed •one

sixth Wingham goal in a 13-3 blowout. Fitzgerald, who scored three times himself for
the Royals, also drew an assist on this. play.

Mike Elmslie scored the
winning goal midway

period. Peter Poulin and
Dean Tolton assisted on the
goal.

final minute of the second,
with Howson getting the
goal.
Blyth made a determined
bid to close the gap in the
third period with three goals,
scored by Darryl Elliott,

a goal by Wickhorst, his
second of the game, from
Elmslie iced the cake for
Wingham.

Blyth.
On Saturday, Wingham
tangled with the Mount
Forest Pee Wees in the
Wellington -Perth league and
came out on the bottom end
of a 10-2 score. Peter Poulin,
from Jake Richardson, and
Anesh Bodasing, from
Jonathan Grummett, were
the only goal -scorers for
Wingham.
Matt Elmslie was in the
nets for Wingham while at
the opposite end of the ice
Jason Weiler kept . the nets
clean for Mount Forest.
In a game played at
Milverton on Friday,
Wingham dropped a 3-1
decision. Wingham got its
only goal on a power play
midway through the second
period with Anesh Bodasing
doing the damage, assisted
by Jason Balzer.
Although Milverton took
all five of the minor penalties
assessed in the game,
Wingham was able to
capitalize on the man -
advantage only once, as
Milverton scored a goal in
each period for the win.

fensively. Not until the 12:38
mark of the first period did
Wingham open the scoring
on a power play goal by
Cousins, who tallied again
before the period ended to
give Wingham a 2-0 cushion.
It was a different Royals
team that hit the ice in the
second period. They came
out flying and from then on
all the unfortunate Monkton
goalies saw was a blue and
gold blur up and down the ice
and a lot of rubber in their
nets.
Fitzgerald scored the third
Wingham' goal in the first
minute of the second period
on a nice set-up by Golley, a
combination which is
becoming a very effective
line for the Royals.
Goals by Stephenson,
Cousins, Irwin and
Stephenson again gave
Wingham a 7-0 lead before
Monkton's Mike Jacob broke
through to put his team on
the board. Another tally by
Cousins made it 8-1 after two
periods.

cards as the Royals struck
for four more goals before
Steve Elliott got Monkton's
third and final goal.
Fitzgerald, again on a set-
up by Golley, closed out the
scoring.
Although it didn't make
much difference to the
outcome of the match, the
Royal power play continued
to be effective, tallying twice
in four opportunities.
Monkton, meanwhile, was
held off the scoreboard on all
seven of, its man -advantage
opportunities, as penalty -
killing continued to be ex-
tremely effective.
Jay MacLaurin, who has
taken more than his share of
lumps while soldiering on the
forward lines, got some
more bruises in this one, as
he was caught dallying at the
corner of the Monkton net
and got his head thumped
against the goalpost for his
trouble.
Also on the casualty list
was Brian Ten Pas, who took
an early shower.
Both returned to play
strongly in a 5-5 tie at Ripley
on Sunday night, however,
with MacLaurin getting a
goal and three assists and
Ten Pas scoring two goals.

IT WAS THAT KIND OF A NIGHT for Monkton
goaltenders Mark Thompson and Sandy Irnes Friday
night, as Dave Stephenson picked up the puck, calmly
cruised in and fired a bullet to the glove side for a short-
handed goal that gave the Royals a 4-0 lead. Wingham
went on to trounce Monkton 13.3 in a blowout.
