Elmslie and Dean Tolton to

-own record
THE BRUSSELS CONNECTION of Brian TenPas (far side) and Ken Cousins put on a
textbook demonstration of how to stage a two-on-one.break to score a go-ahead goal
midway through the second period as the Wingham Royals battled the Ripley In-
termediates last Friday night. TenPas and Cousins, both rookies with the Royals this
season,. accounted for all four goals for Wingham in the 4-4 tie.

Mr. Curtis, who holds the
tower's best -time record for
the over -30 category,
reported he ran it this time in
14:47, but added that is not
too bad considering the
damp weather made
breathing "pretty hard" in

Mr. Curtis said he

The Wingham Advance -Times, Oct. 31, 1984- Page 13
Royals off to flying t rl
witwin,tie in Iwo games
The Wingham Royals are
off to a flying start in their
WOAA Intermediate hockey
season, with a win and a tie
in their first two games.
In both contests the Royals
had to come from behind,
showing surprising poise for
a team which has just un-
dergone a major rebuilding.
Based on the per-
formances to date, local
hockey fans are in for a real
treat on Friday nights this
year, with some very ex-
citing newcomers adding a
new dimension to the team
which reached the WOAA
championship last season.
In their home opener at the
Wingham arena last Friday
night, the Royals started
against the best by hosting
the powerful Ripley In-
termediates, who had
eliminated them in the
championship series last
spring, and battling to a 4-4
draw.
Goaltender Ron Smith was
his old self, turning in a
sparkling performance in
the Wingham net, especially
in the second period when
the Royals appeared to wilt
briefly under a relentless
Ripley attack.
The team came back with
a vengeance in the third,
however, as younger legs
appeared to turn the tide.
They tallied twice to knot the
score and threatened to take
the lead right up until the
final buzzer.
Two newcomers, the
Brussels Connection of Ken
Cousins and Brian Tenpas,
played an outstanding game
on the forward lines, ac-
counting for all four Royal.
goals.
The Royals had six new
faces in the line-up for this
game and the inexperience
showed during the early
stages as most of the first
half of the opening period
was played in the Royal
zone. After that the Royals
found their skating legs,
though, and got stronger and
stronger as the game went ,
on.
Coach Bill Kerr had the
team checking well and not
until 11:10 of the first period
did Ripley break through for
a power play goal luy Mike
Pollock, assisted by Jamie
Gallant.
Two minutes later
Wingham returned the favor
with Cousins scoring the first
of his two goals on the night,
assisted by Randy Clarke
and TenPas, while Rpiley's
Paul Wilken was off for
hooking.
The Royals took the lead
Howick Jrs. battle
to tie Grand: Valley
The Howick Juniors came
from behind in the third
period to gain a 7-7 tie with
last year's league champion
Grand Valley Harvesters in •
OHA hockey action last
week.
The Harvesters tallied
four times in the opening
period, despite being outshot
20-12, to grab the early lead.
They then put the puck
past Kent Gibson early in the
second period to increase
their lead, and the period
was over half gone before
Rola Drost put Howick on the
scoreboard, -connecting after
a pass.from David Harding.
Again Howick outshot the
Harvesters 14-12, but trailed
on the scoreboard 5-1.
The third period saw
Howick come out and do
some hitting. Eight seconds
into, the period, Mark Leslie
tallied after taking a pass
from Drost. Then John
Mock, taking a pass from
Doug Taylor, connected for
Howick's third goal and, 42
-seconds later, Mock hit the
spot , again after Scott
Norman and Drost got him
the puck:
After a couple of fighting
majors had been handed out,
Grand Valley tallied to open
up its lead again, and 52
seconds later the Harvesters
scored again to - increase the
lead.
However Howick was not
finished and the Juniors
cameback and scored three
more times before the game
ended to earn the 7-7 tie.
Harding, Norman and Leslie
were the marksmen.
Howick outshot Grand
Valley by a 56-31 margin
overall in the contest.
Next home game for. the
Juniors is this Sunday, Nov:
4, at 2 p.m. when they fake on
Brussels.
Howick minor
hockey report
An eight-d'etg hockey
school has just been com-
pleted by all minor hockey
teams: Pre -Tyke, Novice,
Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam,
and Midget as well as Junior
and Senior Ringette.
The school was sponsored
by the Howick Optimist Club
with instruction under the
capable hands of Don McKee
from Kitchener and his
assistants. Thanks was
expressed to all members of
the Howick Optimists for
their interest in the minor
sports program.
WOAA Atom Hockey
Last Friday the Atoms
traveled to Mildmay for an
exhibition game. This was
their first game of the
season.
The Atoms got off to a
successful start by defeating
Mildmay 7-4. Philip
Livermore led the Howick
attack by scoring six goals;
the other goalwas cored by
Kyle Wheeler.
Goaltending duties were
shared by Darren Brown and
Dennis Wintemute.
The Atoms played another
exhibition game at Clinton
on Saturday. Clinton defeat-
ed Howick 7-4 in a very close
game.
The score was tied 2-2 at
the end of the second period,
but there was plenty of goal -
scoring in the third.
Wheeler scored his first
hat trick of the season with
Livermore getting the other
Howick goal. Brown and
Wintemute tended the goal.
Coaches for the season are
Ron Livermore, Doug
Hargrave, Wayne Stewart
and the manager is Bill
Wintemute.
WOAA Pee WeeUoekey
Howick Pee Wees traveled
to Clinton on Saturday for
their first game of the
season. Howick came up
with an excellent team effort
and defeated Clinton by a
score of 12-3.
Many of the goals resulted
from good passing plays.
Robbie Van Den Broek and
Philip Livermore led the
attack, each getting a hat
trick. Other Howick scorers
were Oliver Tritton with two
goals and an assist; Donald
Livermore, one goal and one
assist; Jason Douglas, a goal
and an assist; Steve Gibson,
one goal and two 'assists.
Getting assists were Steven
MacGregor and Jayson
Potts with two and Jaret
Henhoeffer, Andrew Weber
and Jeremy Taylor each
with one.
Goaltending duties were
shared by Peter Stewart and
Mark Fraser. Coaches for
the year are RoneLivermore,
Paul Douglas and Stephen
Tritton and the manager is
Jerry Potts.
midway through the second
period as TenPas scored a
power play goal, from
Cousins and Dave
Stephenson. The lea& proved
short-lived, however, as
Ripley roared back to even
the score with Kevin
Stewart's goal just 12
seconds later, and then took
a 3-2 lead on Stewart's
second of the night from
Pollock and speedy Brian
Regier.
Starting the third trailing
by a goal, Royal hopes
seemed in evaporate when
Ripley Captain Brent Arm-
strong took advantage of a
defensive lapse to put the
puck behind Smith for a 4-2
lead in the opening minute of
the period.
Still the team refused to
quit. TenPas' second goal six
minutes into the period, from
Cousins and Mark Foxton,
made it 4-3 and then Cousins
scored from Jim Kellar a
couple of minutes later to
make it 4-4.
Both teams had their
chances in the final half of
the period, with the Royals in
particular applying the
pressure and coming close
on several occasions, but had
to settle for the tie.
Coach Kerr and his
assistants, former hard -rock
defenceman Dennis Knox
and Alex Henderson, should
be pleased with the way the
Royals played in this match
against last year's top team
in the league and parti-
cularly with the play of their
young defensive corps, with
former Ironman Len
Stamper providing a steady
presence on the blueline.
With several defencemen
absent for the match, the
coaches had Dave Burns
playing on the blueline
beside Ken Higgins, while
Stamper was matched with
veteran Tom Irwin and both
pairs acquitted themselves
well.
ROYALS 7,EXETER 6
Fresh off their tie with
Ripley on Friday, the Royals
traveled to Exeter on Sunday
and skated to a come -from -
behind' 7:6" wi°n' over - the
Mohawks.
Captain Dave Stephenson
led the Royals with two goals
and two assists, including a
short-handed ' goal on a
breakaway in the second
period which proved to be
the turning point in the
contest.
Again . the special teams
played well. Coach Bill Kerr
attributed the win to the
performance by the penalty-
killers, who did not allow a
power play goal by Exeter
throughout the contest, while
picking up one short-handed
goal themselves. Wingham
also scored twice on the
power play.
Exeter struck quickly at
the start of the game,
scoring a goal by Ed Willis in
the first minute and adding
markers by Brian Mercer
and Dave Jackson to take a
3-0 lead by the 16:06 mark.
Wingham regained some
ground when Randy Clarke
got the Royals on the
scoreboard at 16:52, but went
into the dressing room
trailing by 3-1.
Stephenson brought the
Royals to within one 1:28 into
the second period with a
power play goal from Len
Stamper and Pete Goodall
while Willis sat out a penalty
for playing with a broken
stick. However Exeter's
Randy Kraul got that one
back a minute later to make
it 4-2.
Then, while the Royals
were short-handed with Ken
Fitzgerald in the box for
cross-checking, Goodall
sprung Stephenson loose on a-
breakaway and the Wing -
ham captain made no mis-
take, putting the puck behind
Steve Sararas.
That goal inspired the
Royals, who struck for two
more to take a 5-4 lead, with
Mark Foxton getting his first
as a Royal from Ken Fitz-
gerald and then setting up
Dave Golley for the go-ahead
goal on a power play.
Willis brought Exeter back
onto even terms with his
second goal of the game at
13:47 to end the period tied at
five.
The Mohawks got onto the .
board first in the third
period, taking a 6-5 lead on a
goal by Jackson at the 3:11
mark. That set the stage for
yet another Wingham
comeback, with Brian
TenPas getting the equalizer
from Stephenson at 9:35 of
the period to set the stage. for
Dave Burns' winning goal
with less than two minutes to
play,,gssiifste l b ,T,enlPas sad
Ken Cousins.
Again the Royals, who are
showing a nice mix of youth
and experience, proved they
have the character to come
from behind. The team now
has three points in its first
two games and seems likely
to get even better as the
season progresses. The next
test comes Friday night
when Teeswater comes to
town for an 8:30 game and
they visit Lucknow on
Sunday.

ROBBING T,WEM BLIND—Goaltender Ron .Smith put on one of his patented perfor-
mances in the net for the Wingham Royals on Friday night, frustrating the Ripley
shooters at every turn. d'n this play in the third period with Ripley leading 4-2, Smith
challenged Paul Wilken who was alone in the slot and came up a winner, deflecting
the shot high. The Royals fought back to gain a 4-4 tie.
