At merit's end
by Ermo Bombeck
I have no intention of
telling you what sign I was
born under, but when you
hear my destiny, all of you
who are born under it will
recognize it immediately.
"You try, but you never
seem to come out even at the
end of a day. There are
always loose ends."
"Enduring relationships
elude you. You seem cold and
uncaring. Advise against
getting a pet."
"Financial affairs domin-
ate until end of the month.
Heed attorney's advice."
vice."
"Power struggle occurs at
your job. You makd wrong
choice".
"Sun is in favourable
position. An 80 -year-old
seeks your companionship.
Proceed carefully."
That is why you cannot
imagine my shock when a
reader who is "into
astrology" told me I was
going to get married before"
this year is ,out.
Do you realize that I have
only 85 days to buy new
underwear, clean out my
closets and pull together
loose ends? As I was telling
my husband, "How can I
possibly enter into a new
marriage in three months
looking like I do?"
"What's wrong with the
way you look?" he asked.
"Look at this body!
Remember Shirely Mac -
Laine in `Terms of Endear-
ment'? Eventually, it all
comes down to something
satin and clingy in a bed -
rook. I'll have to go on a
diet. And I've got to have two
teeth filled."
"They bother you?"
"No, beet men get awfully
upset when all the parts start
to deteriorate a few weeks
after the wedding. What do
you think about the kids?"
"What about them? he
asked, turing the pages of
the paper.
"Should I walti them out
right away or hide them until
we see how things go?"
"I'd hide 'em for awhile."
"You're right. I suppose
I'll have to change some of
my habits,. like leaving the
car seat up after I've used it
and giving your clothes away
when I'm sick of them."
"And don't forget saving
the paper after you've read
it," he said.
"Yeah. Good grief, you
don't suppose it's the 80 -
year -old who's supposed to
appear when the sun is in a
favorable position, do you?"
My husband yawned.
"Look, if,he doesn't show up,
I'll hang on a couple of weeks
longer."

Q. We are moving into a
medium-size apartment 'and
then will be moving into a
home of our own in about two
years.
We. have the space for._a,
small dining room set in the
area just off the living room
and I am trying to decide
whether I should spend the
money on something that
would be fairly permanent or
whether 1 should wait until
later.
I
want an attractive dining
area but I am not certain just
what sort of decorating
theme I am going to want in
a home. I am just now get-
ting used to shopping for
home furnishings and it
seems difficult to know how
to choose what I want. What
do you suggest?—B.C.T.
A. Since you are unsure of
your likes and unclear about
just what you eventually will
want in your dream home,
choose something for your
dining room that is casual,
easy, to live with now and the
kind of thing you could either
use later in a family room or
on a. deck or in a patio.
Aluminum -frame chairs
with attractive fabric
cushions and a metal table
with glass or plastic lamin-
ate top would be charming
for now..And when you move
into a larger home you'll
already have your outdoor
dining taken care of. Then
you can furnish your dining
room with the type of furni-
ture you feel is most ap-
propriate.
I'n the meantime you will
find your tastes maturing.
You can help yourself along
by doing some studying, too,
or by hiking a class in in-
terior design. This will give
you a head start on furnish-
ing a larger home, a con-
siderable task if you take
interior design seriously.
You will be happier with your
'final choice if you are more
comfortable with what is
available. And you will be
better able) to . choose an
interior designer to work
with you if you choose that
route.
Q. My son. is quite a col-
lector of all sorts of things
from music albums to elec-
tronic gadgets. His room is a
terrible jumble because he
has run out of space.
We are considering
stalling bookshelves
which some of his treasures
can be kept. However, the
things he has are quite heavy
and 1 am worried about wall

shelves collapsing under so
much weight.
We must do something
right away because Itis room
is a near disaster. We have a
limited budget for this
project but I'm willing to
listen to anything that will
bring some order to this
chaos.—R.V.
A. One of the very tiest and
most economical solutions, I
believe, is to invest in a num-
ber of metal utility shelves —
the kind that are designed
for garage storage. They
may not look terribly lovely
to you in the hardware store
but with a coat of paint the
color of your son's bedroom
walls you may agree they
serve a purpose and serve it
well.
These utility shelves are
sturdy and designed to hold
considerable weight. The
shelves have a sort of high-
tech look to them and some

people like to emphasize that
by painting the shelves a
contrasting color if they
have a very contemporary
room.
Another especially good
idea for a youngster's room:
Buy a set of old school
lockers at a surplus sale.
Paint the lockers, inside and
out. The spaces make great
storage.
Q. I need an inexpensive
coffee table and two end
tables for my living room. I
like rather contemporary
furnishings. Would you give
me some ideas for do-it-
yourself projects?—R.B.
A. If you need a rec-
tangular coffee table con-
sider covering two squares
(they could be boxes or any
solid foundation) with in-
expensive carpeting or even
heavy fabric. Space the
boxes apart and top with a
sheet of glass. Use just one
box for a smaller end table.
