Safety tips
for home
and cottage
Unless you're an avid gar-
dener, you probably don't do
any more work around the
grounds at thecottage that)
you have to. Still, St. John
Ambulance has some sug-
gestions for, doing, your out-
door work safely so you don't
need first aid. for cuts and
burns and puncture wounds.
Keep areas around the cot-
tage tidy so there are no
sharp objects or broken
glass to cut bare'feet.
Make sure there are no
hidden potholes to trip up the
unwary,
Before you mow grass,
rake it or check for stones
and bottle caps that could in-
jure someoneif they came
flying out of the mower.
Keep small children a safe
distance away from mowers
and trimmers.
Don't wear loose clothing
or jewelery when you oper-
ate power tools.
Wear shoes when oper-
ating a lawn moW r.
Keep appliances sharp and
clean. Be sure to turn off
and -or disconnect a power
tool before you repair it or
try to remove something
stuck in the blades. Follow
manufacturers' directions
for servicing any appliance.
Don't use electrical appli-
ances in wet or damp areas.
If someone is shocked by
contact with a wire or an ap-
pliance, break the contact
before you try to help them.
For instance, turn off the
power at source, or if not
possible push the appliance
and cord away with a . dry
stick.
Store power tools in a high,
dry place safe both from
damp and from children.
Don't try to use tools for
jobs they weren't designed
for, or try to make them
work too hard.
Keep proper footing and
balance at all. times - don't
overreach.
