The MI! bscrlbe1'-owners
of the Bru e Municipal Tele-
'phone.System will make an
historic decision next week.
On Aug. 30 they will accept
one of seven tenders to buy
the 73 -year-old system,
which serves approximately
10,000 customers in the
communities of Port Elgin,
Kincardine, Paisley and
Tiverton.
The bids range from a high
of $10.5 million offered by the
Bell Telephone Company of
Canada to a low of $5.4
million from the muni
cipalities of Paisley, Kin-
cardine and Elderslie.
Although the Bell bid is the
highest, subscribers are
under no obligation to accept
the highest tender. They will
be considering which bid will
maintain the present
reasonable rates, retain
local control, maintain high
standards of service, keep
local offices open and keep
the present employees on the
job.
The second-highest bid,
offered by Lakeshore Tele-
communications of Port
Elgin at $9.5 million, is
unique in that the present
subscribers will retain 50 per
cent ownership.
According to Ron
McIntosh, one of the prin-
cipals in Lakeshore Com-
munications, "Local
ownership will increase to
75.5 per cent, with sub-
scribers retaining 50 per
cent, if our bid is accepted.
In addition, each subscriber
will receive an immediate
lump -sum payment of
$13,380.
"This is slightly lower than
the Bell bid, but we will keep
all the present employees,
maintain the same rates and
keep all the local offices and
work centres.. We have no
pians to increase rates or
change mileage charges. In
fact, we are proposing a
profit-sharing plan for
employees within one year if
our bid is successful. No
other tender includes these
benefits."
A local residential phone
nw costs $4.80 a month, with
a $17 connecting charge,
while a business phone is
$9.90 with a $34 connection
charge. Bell rates in neigh-
boring Southampton are
nearly double: $7.95 for a
residential phone with a
$37.75 connection charge and
$17.80 for a business phone
with a $89.25 connection
charge.
Mr. McIntosh also said his
company would expand the
present five -member board
of commissioners to a 10 -
member board, of whom at
least five would be local
people, and with a local
chairman. Present sub-
scrit1ers would be offered
first rights to acquire 32.5
million m preferred shares
with a 14 per cent annual
dividend.
Other tenders have been
prepared by the employees
of the , Bruce Municipal
Telephone System in part-
nership with the Wightman
Telephone System and
Durham Telephone System
at $9,002,000; Bruce Tele-
phone Company, $9 million;
Amtelecom-Bruce Inc.,
$9,151,000; PBX Dominion
Telecommunications and
Supplies Ltd., $9.2 million,
and Paisley, Kincardine and
Elderslie at $5,418,000.
