GLOBAL TELEVISION'S
\\ ROVING REPORTER
I guess we were about 20
miles south of Owen Sound
when we noticed it. At first
glance it appeared to be a
little gift shop standing all
alone on a country highway.
A sign nearby read "Stair.- •
way to Collectables". I won-
dered at the time how any-
one could make a living run-
ning an isolated gift shop,out
in the middle of nowhere.
I mentioned it to Jenny. •
She didn't say anything. She
just stopped, turned around
and drove back. She knew
from past experience that if
she didn't, we'd both be won-
dering about that shop all the.
way back to the city. •
As soon 'as we walked in
the door Jenny stood in
shocked amazement. It was
a treasure house!
The walls were alive with
collector's plates. Mugs and
figurines filled the shelves.
People were tearing, around
trying to fill orders.
The exterior had been de-
ceiving. It was a big, ram-
bling building. We went
down a few stairs to a small
but very posh . art gallery
that featured expensive na-
ture paintings by artists like
George McLean and Robert
Bateman. There were books
for collectors in another
room. In the back was a
large storage area crammed
with books and plates.
Then we went upstairs.
There were newspapers
scattered around, and people
hunched over, pounding
away at typewriters. It was
my turn to be amazed. It
brought back memories.
These were editorial rooms!
A smart -looking young wo-
man got up from one of the
desks and came over to greet
us. She turned out to be a
senior editor. "Stairway to
Collectables" was also a
publishing house!
The writers and editors
were at work on the latest
edition of a newspaper called
"Insight into Collectables".
The editor, Julie -Marie
Innes, was telling us it has a
national circulation of 20,000
and the company also pub-
lishes two other papers that
are sent alt over the con-
tinent.
Julie -Marie . took us into
another office to meet the
owner of the whole set-up,
George Benninger. An ex-
pert on Royal Doulton figur-
ines, he started "Stairways"
seven years ago. He chose
the location because it was
close to his hometown - the
village of Durham, a few
miles down the road. '
He said there are now
about 71/z million plate ,col-
lectors scattered around the
world, so his market is an in-
ternational one.
The Ontario countryside is
full of surprises. That "lit-
tle" gift. shop was one of
them. Big business coun-
try style.

Who
The Landlord,
Me Damage?
UpsiairsTenant, °rim?
Many people forget that they need insurance to
protect the contents of their apartment or
condominium.
In fact, most landlords' insurance only
protects the building, not the contents. And how
do you know if the person upstairs even has
any insurance at all?
To find out where you stand talk to one of
the I.BAO. insurance brokers listed below.
• Is there a difference between an
broker and an agent?
Yes there is. An agent works directly for one
insurance company. An I.B.A. broker is
independent and unbiased.
Your broker is able to choose a policy that
gives you the right coverage at the right price
...making sure you're not under -insured or
over -insured and that your interests are well
represented when you come to malting a claim.
So call your broker and ask if he or she
is a member of the I.BAO.
