Seniors'
Day Centre News
By Nima Patel
It's been a while since we
last had a column in the
paper, so I'll bring everyone
up to date on what's been
going on at the centre.
We had a bingo Aug. 1
which was fun. We went to
Blyth Aug. 2 to see "Cake
Walk", a comedy about an
unusual cake -baking contest.
Everyone wh% went agreed
that the play Was excellent. ,
Our day trip for August
was held on the seventh,
when we went on a tour of the
Versa Care Centre at
Hanover. It was a very
lovely place and the tour was
interesting: In the afternoon,
.We went to the Saugeen
Valley Conservation Area
near Hanover. Marg Sills,
•latito works at the'area, gave
a good slide presentation.
After feeding the animals
at the conservation area, we
headed to McDonald's for ice
cream. It was• a very good
trip.
Marion Zinn was the guest
speaker last Thursday and
she showed some beautiful
slides of the area.
Rita Rice and Marg
Pollock both have returned
from well-deserved and
much -enjoyed vacations.
Now that everyone knows
whathas been going at the
centre — I'll tell you what's
coming up.' ,
We are going to Blyth this
Thursday afternoon to see
"A • Spider in the House".
This play • is a mystery and
many who have seen it
consider it to be one of the
best plays of the season. We
.still have some tickets left,
'So if you are interested .in
going, please call the centre
at 357-1440.
There will be an all -
candidates' meeting at the
centre Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. We
invite all interested citizens
and espially area seniors
to come out to what should be
a very informative meeting.
Each candidate will be given
the opportunity to make a
short speech and then we will
open the floor for discussion.
Elections are "democracy
in action" and these
meetings are animportant
part of. the election process,
so plan on coming to the
meeting.
The Clinton day centre is
coming Aug. 23 to visit, We
will be showing the Abbott
and Costell film "Buck
Privates" that afternoon.
Murray Elston is coming
to the centre Aug. 28 to give a
presentation and we are
going to our. last Blyth play,
"Country Hearts", on Aug.
30. There still are tickets left
if anyone is interested. •
The July newsletter and
the August calendar are still
available so pick up your
copy at the centre. We also
remind our board members
that there is a meeting Aug.

Reporting to - Howick
Township Council on Aug. 7,
road superintendent Glenn
Underwood -said during the
previous weekend seven
road signs had been run
down in Howick Township.
A few days before that, he
said, all the road signs on the
Clifford -Carrick boundary
had been run down and all
the signs between Clifford
and the 14th concession had
been broken,
' "And those signs are on
four by fours," Mr. Un-
derwood said.
Signs in Howick, according
to Mr. Underwood, were
either pulled out, or bent out
of shape'.
"Once they're bent, you
can't bend them back. We're
going to have to order some
new ones."
Asked if he had contacted
the police, Mr. Underwood
replied that he hadn't.
"I think somebody should
be calling the police," said
Reeve John Stafford.
"That's the only way to stop
it."
"They would only have to
catch one person — that
would end it," agreed
another councillor.

Tall ships scheduled
to dock at Goderich
Four and possibly five tall
ships will stop at Goderich
this week as part of their
visit to Ontario lakeports,
town officials have an-
nounced.
The ships, including the
British brigantine Ciudad de
Inca, the Sheila Yeates and
Norfolk Rebel of the United.
States, the Joanna I of
Canada and possibly the
United States schooner
Western Union are
Scheduled to dock at
Goderich the evening of Aug.
16 before heading to Sarnia
the next day.
The Town of Goderich had
been negotiating to bring at
least some of the tall ships to
its harbor in conjunction
with their visits to Windsor
and Sarnia, and its efforts
were rewarded. Town
Administrator Larry
McCabe said the prospect of
a sail up Lake Huron seemed
to appeal to some of the
captains.
"The captains wanted to
get in some sailing time,
which they really haven't
had a chanc& to do on this
tour," he said. "And it
seemed that the sail to'
Goderich appealed to them."
Barring bad weather, the
flotilla should arrive at
Goderich this Thursday
evening and dock all day
Friday before setting sail for
Sarnia.
The Sheila Yeates,
designed from vessels of
Civil War vintage, is 58 feet
long, while the Norfolk Rebel
is' 63 feet and has a crew of
four. The other confirmed
ships are the 85 -foot Joanna I
and the 125 -foot Inca, which
might possibly be joined by
the 130 -foot Western Union.
To prevent congestion, the
road to the Goderich harbor
will be closed during the
stopover. Those planning to
view the tall ships are en-
couraged to park at the
Suncoast Mall on Highway 21
and take advantage of a bus
service to the waterfront.
