Western Ontario understands all thesethings and can even visualize a "Cake -Walk", though Curran, a Montreal native, claims to have devised the entire idea in her mind, not having ex- perienced these events as we have. To this competition come five cakes, among others, and underneath the surface of all the potential winners are their own agonies and insecurities. It is the in- terweaving of these lives that creates the interest for audiences in a play that at times resorts to silliness to garner laughs and tends to be a bit long and tedious in places. For the small - towner, though, it touches off happy memories of the biggest day of the year, whether it is Canada Day, Fair Day, Winter Carnival or Western Hoedown Days! The enthusiastic cast of "Cake -Walk", which opened last , week at the Blyth Festival, tries to carry the play along at a fast pace. Laurel Paetz,•new this year at Blyth and also starring in "A Spider in the House", brings her chocolate cheesecake to the com- petition so a dear friend, a nun like herself, can win a trip to Lourdes. She has forsaken her habit and dressed as a "layman" partly because she does not want to influence the judges, but mainly because she is not sure she likes convent life and wants to enjoy a day "on the outside". Enter a typical small - towner, a do-gooder who is Scout den mother and a fine example to the 'town. She delights, however, in finding fault in others, pointing out the immoral living habits of her townsfolk,, and finding contestants who are breaking the rules. Anne Anglin, a fine actress, overplays her role in the first act until she becomes almost ridiculous. She becomes real late in the play when she admits her insecurities and her hurt at being imitated 4:30 DuMaurier Classic L.P.G.A. The "thrill of the twirl" was gone, she said, and I guess all of us could share a twinge of nostalgia, remembering times our mat of confidence was snatched from beneath us. The only man in the contest is Andrew Martin Thomson who, is charming and very funny as the shy absent-minded archeologist living an unfulfilling disappointing life digging up "bones that dogs have buried"! Awkward scenes with Thomson and Paetz, as they try to establish a relationship, are the funniest in the production. • Patricia Vanstone is the bubbly effervescent Martha who enters a much -praised cake from her restaurant. Beneath the sparkle she, too, hides an agony - a nerve that Den Mother seems to enjoy touching often - and Van - stone is able to bring both laughter and tears to the surface. When Vanstone isn't acting, she sings with a Toronto group, "Sweet Lips". The most impressive cake in the contest is a wedding cake made by Augusta Connors Secord who is played with Snob Hill charm by W. Dorothy, Piner. Her busy and involved life must look so appealing, she thinks, that she decides to decorate a wedding cake with it! The night before her daughter's ,wedding, she and the girl, played by Janet Land who was so great in 'Spider', must 'try to reach a new understanding and you wonder if this can ever be possible this late in the game. Unique openings and closings add to the winsome country charm of this play which is presented July 26 and August 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 10, 14, 15 and 18. COOL RINSE To prevent chlorine and salt water from harming bathing suit fabrics, wash in cool water after each wear- ing, says Clothing and Tex- tile Specialist Margaret Loe- wen of, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food's rural organizations and services branch.
