When choosing pet food, you will notice a chemical analysis on the label. Note the moisture content, which really indicates how much water the food contains. The higher the moisture content, the softer the food. It is less economical food, since add- ing water from your own tap costs you nothing. Ash content refers to the amount of mineral in the food. This is particularly im- portant when selecting food for male cats who are prone to bladder stones. The lower the ash content, the less like- ly aoeat is to have problems. Words boldly displaying "low ash" really mean no- thing unless you have an ac- tual percentage to use as comparison. Although the percentage is not a true indi- cation of the complex prob- lem of ash content and cats, all the consumer can go by is what is provided on the label. Protein content is also of concern in pet foods, es- pecially for dogs. "High pro- tein" diets are not necessar- ily better diets. In fact, they may be worse than foods with lower levels. It is the quality of protein and whether or not your dog's body can actually use it that is important. Poor quality protein can be very taxing on your pet's body. There is no reference to compare "quality of protein on a label, except for the price. Better protein is more expensive. The following example shows how informative pet food labels are to the consu- mer. If one were to throw to - Movies on Channel 57 THURSDAY, 8:00 P.M. -"PURSUIT". Stars Ben Gazzara, E. G. Martin gether crankcase oil, old lea- ther boots, coal and water, the combination would have" the same chemical analysis that matches the one on a typical pet food label. Be- cause of the lack of signifi- cance between the chemical analysis and nutritional value of a pet food, the Cana- dian Veterinary Medical cis- sociation (CVMA) establish- ed a certification program to correct the problem. Unlike other animal feeds, the only control over pet food is with regards to the actual labelling : what is on the label must be in the can. There is no legal require- ment to ensure that the con- tents must meet your pets nutritional needs. Briefly, the CVMA pro- gram stipulates the follow- ing: - a pet food must contain all the nutrients a pet needs, in amounts that will ade- quately meet normal re- quirements - the chemical analysis on the label must show the pre- sence of these nutrients - the food must be in a palatable and digestible form - it must support normal growth, maintenance, repro- duction, and must be check- ed regularly: to ensure that all these requirements are met. Any pet food that meets the CVMA's guidelines on a continual basis will bear its blue and white seal of appro- val. With more and more pet foods being submitted for testing, you will find the seal on an increased number of labels: It is assurance that your :pet is receiving good quality nutrition, so do; look for__ it :when choosing your pet's food. , Movies on Channel 5 FRIDAY, 1:30 A.M.-"WAR AND' PEACE".
