By Sharon Dietz,
Suncor and the Richard`
Ivey Foundation pr ted
donations to the ilitaitland
Valley Conservation Author-
ity last week to wrap up the
purchase by the authority of
the Wawanosh Lake pro-
perty in West Wawanosh
Township.
The 200 acres of rolling
hills and water -filled
lowlands was purchased by
the MVCA in 1978 for
$210,000. The Ministry of
Natural Resources con-
tributed $160,000 toward the
purchase, leaving the
authority to raise the
remaining $'0,000.
The Maitland Con-
servation Foundation con-
ducted fund-raising efforts
and Charles Sauriol of the
Nature Conservancy of
Canada, the only national
non-profit organization of its
kind devoted solely to
preserving environmentally
important lands, was in-
strumental in contacting
prospective donors.
Through his efforts,
Suncor agreedto donate the
final $5,000 required to
complete the purchase. This
was presented to -the MVCA
in a ceremony at Lake
Wawanosh on July 12, at-
tended by representatives
from the authority, the
foundation, Suncor and the
Nature Conservancy.
The lake property, located
just south of the 10th Con-
cession of West Wawanosh,
33/4 miles east of Huron
County Road 1, consists of
hardwood a'hd mixed bush
surrounding a 60 -acre man-
made lake. The property
lends itself to a multitude,of
outdoor education and
recreation activities, in-
cluding wildlife, fishing,
picnicking and canoeing.
