In running as the New
Democratic Party's can-
didate in the upcoming
federal election, Valerie
Bolton said she hopes to
raise the political awareness
of the people of Huron -
Bruce.
Ms. Bolton, 2, resides on a
East Wawanosh Township
farm with her husband,
Dean Walker, and her two
young daughters, Monica
and Amber. She was chosen
at a nomination meeting held
June 14 at Clinton.
She has been active at. all
levels of the NDP organiza-
tion since 1979 and managed
Tony McQuail's campaign in
the provincial election of
1981.
But now the tables have
turned and Mr. McQuail is
her campaign manager. At
an. informal press con-
ference held last Friday at
the Walker -Bolton farm, he
outlined her experience as a
party worker " and a well-
known spokesman for.
women's issues in the
Women Today group.
Ms. Bolton started her
address by saying the NDP's
strong and optimistic stand
makes her committed to the
party and to the country. The
NDP has long been the voice
of the ordinary Canadian,
not big business, she said.
She described five areas of
concern to her and to the
party: jobs, equal op-
portunity for women, high
quality public services, a
fair tax system and nuclear
disarmament.
The first priority of any
government should be jobs,
Ms. Bolton said. Work is

denied the right to a job.
The impact of high
ec hnolbgy will be felt keenly
in the workplace over the
next few years. The NDP
would minimze job loss due
to high tech through the
institution of a shorter work
week and earlier retirement.
Always a spokesman for
women's rights and issues,
Mrs. Bolton said she is proud
of the NDP's record of
commitment to women.
The NDP believes in equal
pay for work of equal value,
she said. The party also
would ensure affordable and
accessible child care, as well
as deal with the problem of
unemployment and poverty
among women, particularly
in single -parent families.
Ms. Bolton said she is
personally committed to
bettering the lot of rural
women and battered women.
The party also is com-
mitted to quality public
services and a universal
pension system. The NDP
has been the voice for these
services in the past, she said,
and will continue to be in the
future.
Canadians have the right
to those types pf services
they have grown accustomed
to and a guarantee of ,the
continuation of those ser-
vices.
The fourth area of concern
is providing Canadians with
a fair tax system which
would eliminate the giant tax
"loopholes" for big cor-
porations.
The NDP would endeavor
to stabilize low interest
rates, provide low-cost loans
for small businessmen and
farmers as well as eliminate
the federal sales tax on farm
fuels.
Last but not'`'least, Ms.
Bolton and the NDP have
come out strongly in favor of

Following Ms. Bolton's
speech, a brief question -and -
answer period was held.
When asked what she
thought the major issue
concerning the people of.
Huron -Bruce in this election
is, she singled out jobs and a
fair return to farmers for
their prodt;cts since farming
and jobs are closely tied
together in this riding.
She was asked what she
thought her chances are of
winning the riding in the
upcoming election and made
no mistake in replying
"great". But she added her
first goal is to make an
impression on the voters of
Huron -Bruce by getting
people to talk about issues
and solutions rather than
personalities.
