CrossroadsrJuly 11, 1984 --Page 15,
We were having breakfast
at the Village Inn in Osh-
weken, a little village on the
Six Nations Reserve near
Brantford, when one of the
band members came over to
ask if we had ever visited the
Hill family's workshop just
across the road. He said they
were exceptional craftsmen..
Although we've done quite
a few stories around the Re-
serve, we'd never heard of
the Hills. Ten minutes later
we were looking at some of
the most unusual carvings
veld ever seen. My wife,
Jg,tiny, who's an amateur ar-
tiSt and potter, seemed
transported to another world
as soon as we walked in the
door. Cameraman Tim Mos-
es gave a low whistle. He
didn't ask if we were going to
do a sto,y. He just turned
and went out to the van to -get
his equiprnen'.
We were"`surrounded by
some of the most impressive
carvings any of us had ever
seen. On top of that, they
were carvings of bone, of all
things!
There were beautiful
figures and ornaments
carved from the antlers of
deer and moose, and,_small
items from the shinbones of
buffalo. There were carvi tgs
of birds and turtles./N ure
seemed to come alive in a
mystical, haunting way, ex-
pressing the folklore and the
religious devotion to nature
so characteristic of our
Native People.
Russell Hill, one of the
three sons in the family, w s
at his workbench drilling he
head of a wolf on one
handle of a knife. He tol • me
that he had learned the craft
from his father, Stan Hill.
"Ten years ago," he said,
"my dad was a steelworker
in the States building sky-
scrapers. Then one of my
brothers died and Dad took
another look at life. He de-
cided Jo return to the Re-
serve and try to make a liv-
ing at his . hobby of wood-
carving. As an experiment
he did sonie pieces from ant-
lers. Public reaction was
favorable and he began to
develop what was then a
completely new idea."
Russell went on to say that
no one had ever tried antlers
as a medium for carving, so
Stanhad to start from
scratch. That meant new
tools, techniques, materials
and methods adapted to
bone. It was trial and error
all the way.
He took his early work to a
few shows and sold all of it.
He expanded his workshop
and brought his sons back to
Oshweken to teach them the
art. Friends in the north be-
gan to send antlers, mostly
from animals that had shed
them.
' These days, Stan travels
most of the time, He attends
about 60 shows a year. Cele-
brities such as Burt Rey-
nolds and Ted Kennedy are
among the family's clients,
and some of the carvings sell
as high as $10,000.
So from trial and error
methods, but still working
from their small workshop in
a little Ontario village, the
Hills have carved out quite a
name for themselves on a in-
ternational scale.
