COUNTRY CHARM—The design of this room began comforter and pillows mingle with blue accents and

Floral print creates
English look
By Barbara Hartung
Q. I have a very plain bed-
room
edroom to which I'd like to give
a country English look, .al-
though I have no English-
tstyle furniture.
Can I create this feeling •
through fabric alone? —
R.P.
A. You could go a long way
in creating a•country English
look in your bedroom with
fabric -and. accessories, even,
though your furniture may
be simply plain traditional or
contemporary.
One of the charms of coun-
try .English is the use of fab-
ric, particularly of large or
small .floral patterns with
many colors, sometimes -in a
polished finish.
Start with a plain -colored
carpeting and a slightly
lighter shade of 'paint for the
wall. Take the color inspira-
tion for the carpeting and
walls from your favorite
country English print.
Use the print for generous
draperies and for the bed-
spread. Or instead of a print
bedspread, use the print for
a dust ruffle and top the bed
with a comforter in a solid
shade chosen from the print
fabric.
Add charming wood -
framed, mirrors, interesting
floral prints or small paint-,
ings, jardinieres and rustic
baskets for flowers and sen-
,timental items such as fami-
ly photographs. - -

How should. I furnish this

A. The most flexible way to
furnish your room would be
to select a sleeper sofa
covered in a simulated or
real leather — one with a

Our children have never
understood what "kind of
people" come home from a
vacation to a stack of news-
papers that have been piling.
up for three weeks.
They say a newspaper is
perishable. It's like pigging
out on .leftovers that have
turned green.
My ,husband and I ~ are
those "kind of people
We crawl around the
spoutings, in the bushes and
tall grass until we have har-
vested a stack of rain -soak-
ed, sunbleached news-
papers. Then we sit down
and absorb what has hap-
pened in our absence. .
I read reviews of movies
that are no longer showing,
horoscopes that mean .no-
thing, funerals there were,
held, and sales have miss-
ed.
My husband reads about
games . that were played,
stocks that have soared or
plummeted, government
policies that were made
without him and weather
that has patsed.
Sometimes it takes days to
scan the columns, the comics
.and • the ads. When we
emerge, what do we have to •
show for it besides . hands
stained with ink?
It's sotto hard to explain.
Being informed are the
dues we pay for living in this
country.
If we are indifferent to
what goes on, we give up our
right to criticize, to com-
plain, to offer advice, or to
take pride.
I remember the summer
our family had had it up to
our necks in bad newa7.. This
country was going to hell in a
bushel basket. We needed to
escape it for awhile, go off to
a place where the streams
ran cool and the only ' sound
was the wind rustling
through the trees. We packed
the kids in, a trailer and took
off for an entire summer in
Canada. -
It was utopia. No news-
papers, no radios, no, televi-
sion. We basked in innocence
and ignorance. Then one day
.we were having lunch in a
restaurant and we heard a
news program reporting on
riots.. Detroit was in flames
and unrest and violence was
at a peak.
We both felt as I imagined
Philip Nolan felt in "The
Man Without a Country". He
got his wish to "Bever see or
hear of the United States
again". We hit for home.
Our country didn't need us.
We needed it: It's like a child
who you love during the good
times and commiserate with
during the bad. What can you
do? You can feel.
Maybe that's why we sur-
round ourselves with a stack
of newspapers. They chron-
icle our history, and if we
want to be a part of it, we
have to feel.
I told''you it's hard to ex-
plain.
