INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS
Industry in Ontario to -day is fac-
ing a serious situation in the increas-
ing number of accidents reported to
the Workmen's Compensation Board,
It appears that there were 50,4110
accidents, of which 419' were fatal,
reported to the Board in the year
1922, while' for tide twelve month.
period ending the '30th of September
1923, there were 59,351 accidents re-
ported by industry to the Compensa-
tion Board of this Province, and of
these 375 were fatal. The decrease
in fatalaties is worth while noting,
but the inerease of an average of
practically one thousandeach month:
is something inwhich the whole
community
is interested and some-
thing to which employer and .em-
ployee alike shout
thought. give careful.
It is a fact that accidents can be
prevented and it is also a fact that
t
there
are too many accidents -happen-
ing to -day. Management and e..,
should jointly Tend"a'tan °sm n
d in a cam-
paign of carelessness and help p to cut
the heavy burden that accidents
have laid upon industry in this
o tilt try,
We will now sing that old familia

ballad, entitled', "A sock on the foot
Is worth .two in the eye."

The annual plowing match of the
Rueter District Plowman's Associa-
tion was held on the farxn of Duns-
ford Bros„ on Thursday of last week.
The attendance of spectators, though
of fairly large numbers, ,received
somewhat of a. check, owing to the
cold and dampness of the day, Heavy
showers fell during the previous af-
ternoon and evening and while the
rain held off fairly well all day the.
sky was overcast and many prospect-
ive 1
ive visitors stayed away.
The rain may have kept away spec-
tators, but it was welcomed by the
plowmen, putting the land in fairly
good condition for plowing. The.
classes in both sod and stubble as
well as tractor competition were
closely contested and excellent work
done. There were .twenty-one con
testants this year in all `,classes,
whereas, the previous record was fif-
teen. Youth and old age were rep-
resented in the' contest, the oldest
Plowman being Richard Hunter, of
town, and the youngest Will Allison;,

Usborne. The winners are as
