new'!' -conversion requests
until the end of January
because they are
swamped with people
trying to convert.
David Peterson (Lib.
London Centre) stated
that some firms such as
Union Gas cause serious
difficulties for people
wanting to convert to
natural gas. •
"They will not pump
out the oil. They will not
take out the oil tanks
people have in their
homes. They will provide
no trade-in value for
perfectly good oil fur-
naces."
The Minister of Energy
has condemned the
federal government's
decision to approve ex-
tensive natural gas ex-
ports to the U.S. calling
the decision -premature
and inappropriate.
Canadians could be hurt
because domestic natural
gas prices will rise as
exports deplete our
conventional reserves.
Such a consequence
will force the use of
higher -priced frontier
reserves, and Canadians
should be compensated
for the higher prices they
will have to pay.
He told the Legislature
that he did not believe
Ottawa's or the National
Energy Board's view of
possible heating oil
shortages this winter.
Based on his own con-
sultations with the major
oil companies, he had
concluded there would
be no shortages this
winter, barring un-
foreseen circum';tances.
Oppositionpartieshave
attacked the government
for not expressing its
outrage with Ottawa over
the gas exports until after
a commitment had been
made.
In defence, the Energy
Minister, Mr. Welch, said
the government had
clearly opposed natural
gas exports until two
criteria are met: that a
surplus has been
determined and a
complete national energy
plan is'established.
While Stuart Smith did
not dispute the point, he
attacked the governifient
for even giving credence
to the concept of a natural
gas surplus, saying that
all Canada's natural gas
reserves should be kept
for the future.
He also questioned the
Minister's apparent
selective reliance on
NEB figures when
discussing potential
surpluses, one day
acknowledging' that he
did not trust NEB data
with respect to heating oil
supplies and the next
approving the Board's
calculation of a national
surplus figure on exports •
based on that.

What have you kept from Christmas?
BY THE REVEREND
ARTHUR F.
GARDNER,
RETIRED UNITED
CHURCH MINISTER
Yes, Christmas is past,
but what have you kept
from Christmas?
It is true' that Christ-
mas is not necessarily a
time of giving, but of
keeping.
How many of us- will
keep the Spirit of
Christmas through the–
year ahead?
The experience of
Christmas confirms the
claim of the New
Testameggt that we should
keep the spirit of
Christmas.
How can we do this?
By doing what Mary,
the mother of our Lord,
did. Let us ponder the
great qualities and the
fact of Christ in our
hearts.
What will you keep
from Christmas
throughout the days of
the coming year?
First, let us keep the
wonder of Christmas. The
incarnation (the coming
in human form) of the
mighty God is the
supreme miracle and
wonder. God's love led
Him to make his in-
credibly wonderful gift
to us and all men. The
prophet Isaiah (29:9)
before the . coming of
Christ said, "Stay
yourself and wonder."
inisterfs
study
Now the Christ has
come, do we wait in
adoring wonder before
Him?
In Charles Wesley's
hymn, "Love Divine, All
Love Excelling", he
speaks in the closing line
of being, "lost in wonder,
love and praise,"
Let us go from this
Christmas keeping the
wonder of it, that God's
own Son should come to
die for the likes of us.
Second, what will you
keep for the journey
through the coming year
that came to you at
Christmas? Keep not only
the wonder, but the
simplicity of Christ.
We sophisticated
people often lose the
essential simplicities of
the Christmas gospel.
Unlike the triumphant
glory of Easter or the
mysterious, earth
shaking power of Pen-
tecost, Christmas is as
simple as a baby's birth
in a stable, with

Christmas may be "out
of this world" in a
profound sense, but it is
also down to earth. God
came to simple folk to
make known His self -
giving and self -revelation
in Jesus Christ.
Throughout the lifetime
of Jesus, it was the
common people who
heard Him gladly. Surely
this was because of what
He said and how He said

Thirdly, let ^us keep at
the heart of Christmas,
the event that makes
Christmas. This is af-
firmed again and again in
the Scriptures.
"When the fulness of
the time was come, God
sent forth His Son, made'
of a woman—" (Gal.
4:14), (also Math.1:23
and Luke 1:31-33).
As Gilbert Keith
Chesterton once put it, "it
is a gift of God that cane
seen and touched, Christ
Himself."
It is the Christmas gift!
Amid all the merriment
of giving and receiving
presents, the carols,
dinners, cards and kin-
dness, let us keep Christ
in our hearts, at the
centre of our thinking and
at the centre of our
worship. Let us keep
these things, this fact and
this love which is God in
Christ.
