Faces
of the
Future
Photos and text
by Dave Sykes
This past year was recognized as
International Year of the Child.
That recognition was prompted by an
edict of the United Nations to offer
equal opportUnities, to children across
the world.
A noble and long overdue gesture.
The year focused on children in a new
light. and produced such phrases as
Kids Are People Too. And that
aphorism perhaps, awakened and
kindled.a"new spirit:
Chijdren, afterall, are our future.
Our hopes, dreams, struggles and
living conditions are passed on to them.
And our frustrations are often passed
on in the hopes they can accomplish
what we could not,.
We are their only teachers. They
trust the world and know only of its
shortcomings from us and our own 41
inadequacies.
The responsibility is great but it is
also rewarding:
The photos on this page are just
faces of children involved in a variety
of activIties.
Their faces hide nothing. Every
emotion is there on the surface for
anyone to 'ee. F'or children there is no
reason tr, mask to their displeasure,
discomfort',Inschief or joy.
This page is, in just a small way,
recognition of the children of Goderich
at the end of a year and decade they
could call their own.
Yet for many children the year was
„ of–little significance. Social injustices
are still tolerated although denounced
as socially repugnant.
Train a child in the way he should go
and he will never depart from it.
