BY JOANNE BUCHANAN The Canada Safety Council has some safety tips for those of you who have survived Christ- mas: If you have a real Christmas tree, remove it from the house as soon as possible after the Christmas celebrations. It could become a fire hazard. Do not burn the tree in the fireplace. Make sure the children are using their toys safely. Has an ap- propriate storage space been arranged for the new gifts? Toys, sports equipment, etc. should be put in a safe place, out of the way. If you have received sports equipment (skiis, skatilal etc.), get into shap-ebefore using them -- you will reduce the risks of accidents. Christmas safety tips extend to New Year's celebrations. Watch that champagne or sparkling wine cork or plastic stopper. Make sure it is aimed in a safe direction. Make a safety resolution for 1980. Many safety conscious people, while careful during the Christmas activities and celebrations, tend. Jo forget that safety precautions do not end with Christmas. Others simply offer a plowed parking lot at the threshold of a pristine wonderland. Parks and recreation areas geared up for winter use are described in the 1979-80 edition 'of Winter Outdoors, Ontario Provincial Parks and Trails, available free at the Ministry of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreational Areas Branch, ROOM 3321, Whitney Block, Queen's Park, Toronto; M7A 1W3, or call (416) 965-3081. Two parks (Bronte Creek and Wasaga Beach) maintain ar- tificial ice rinks and may have hills for tobogganing. Agriculture Canada economists praject Canadian pork output in .198Q may be 6-10 percent larger than in 1979 with the most significant in- crease, 10-15 percent over a year ago, taking place in the first half. Total cattle slaughter for 1980 is expected to be about five percent below the estimated 1979 level of 2,900,000 head, 13 percent below a year ago. Steer kill next -year is expected to be very near the, 1979 level. However, herd rebuilding will result in heifer retention. Little changein cow slaughter is anticipated in 1980. The federal conomists indicated th t North American catt prices are expect 'd to strengthen '-somewhat during the winter and spring, however the ef- fect of depressed pork prices and slower rates of income growth are deterrants to beef price increases. For this winter A1-2 steers at Toronto may move into the mid $80 range. It is expected beef demand could strengthen in the last half of 1980 as the pork cycle perhaps begins to turn around. Looking at.,cornpetitive meats the preliminary annual production quota for chicken has been set at 880 million pounds, five percent above estimated 1979 output. Chicken prices in the coming year are likely to rise to ac- commodate the expected increases in feed grain prices. For turkey, the national agency has lowered the 1980 production target to 215 million pounds, down 15 million pounds.
