WOOD At the time of Jesus' birth--m-any people had been .forced to leave their homes and travel to the place where they had been born in order that they might be included in the census and also pay their taxes., A faithful\Jew might well have cried out in the words of the psalmist, "Why. do You stand far off, 0 Lord? How long, 0 Lord? How long will You hide Your face from me?" - God answered ' that prayer through the birth of Jesus. Mary and Joseph, like many other displaced persons, had found crude lodging in Bethlehem. It was a fully human child to whom Mary had given birth, yet this child was not only an answer to 'a mother'sprayer for a child, but the answer to a prayer of a whole people. Long before that night God had promised, "Behold, a young woman shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel (which means, God with us)." In Jesus then, God entered human life. God, born a man -child, entered our world of sin and evil and darkness to ex- perience in history the hard knoeks and jolts which come on the road of human life. But with God here in Jesus the darkness is not over -powering for the light of this very human life shows the presence of God in a world turified rotten with evil;- cruelty and suffering. That light gives hope in our world today with the sufferings of the Cam- bodians, of the boat people, of the American hostages in Iran, of the families of the 15,000 people who have disappeared in Argen- tina, of the people of Rhodesia, of the sufferers in South Africa under the iniquitous doctrine of apartheid. God is not absent; He is here. In the most unex- pectedplaces God's goodness breaks forth, love shines, and the eternal meaning of Christmas is made clear. God is not apart from human life but with it. Mullen, Rick Rompf, Jack ITuckworth and Clare Bedard. The Royal Canadian Legion,Branch 109, held a service at the funeral home Thursday evening. Birthright offers the symbolic shelter of the Stable to girls and womeh who find pregnancy a great burden, but who with our help, can go on, and give birth. Birthright offers the symbolic gifts of the shepher- ds in the form of clothing and other essentials to these girls and women. Kingly treasures are few since we rely on donations and our. staff are volun- teers. But even more valuable than treasures, Birthright offers the priceless' gift of friendship, the promise that each baby's birth will be an honoured oc• casion of joy and wonder. This year the need to let our service be known is greater, for the abortion mentality is growing and encroaching on the value and safety of human life. We must reach the Star, bring it closer, widen, the circle of warmth and guidance. We need you as a,yolunteer in 1980. We need your gift of life now, Blessed Christmas. irtbriitht 585 YORK ST., N6B 1R6, LONDON CALL COLLECT 432-7197 (AREA TEL.) 524-2013 357.1679 302-6541 r4 Givej a Gift of Life - ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE - SHOULD YOU WISH TO GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR SERVICE...5U OUR CLASSIFIED AG UNDER 'PERSONAL' EACH WEEK IN THIS PAPER, v fesuients entertain holiday Many residents have expressed their- pleasure after Thursday evening when Mary Hearn, leader of the Wesley -Willis Church choir, played her harp, and the men's orchestra provided a much enjoyed concert for family night.
