Round 'IT' About
It is after midnite, the
rain has been falling
heavily since about 5 p.m.
I have been reading for a
couple of hours or more,
often wondering that the
heavy beat of the ram did
not change tempo - how
can it keep that steady
pace? how is it I have not
heard the sound of rain -
just rain - in years?
There has been no
blaring of the television
to shut it out - that must
be the reason. •
Walt went to bed hours
ago and I have been
puttering around - trying
to be quiet - but how do
you quietly hammer d
nail - well it was just a
skinny little nail - and I
was bound I was going to
hang that triangle of felt
that has the crossed flags
of my two home countries
and GODERICH printed
in large letters.
Somehow, this pennant
appeared after many
years tucked away in a
drawer. I had intended
giving it to the grandsons
for their wall - but since
that year has slipped by I
might as well use it
myself. It stands out but
still is not too con-
spicuous.. and anyway I
like it!
It's funny how you feel
about a second home -
you want things entirely
different from the other -
YOU are different in the
way you feel and things
you do - SQ your house is
created around that other
person. And so I was
enjoying making a
splashy corner of the
_room a real conversation
piece.
Can you imagine me)
hanging - no nailing - a
straw hat on the wall near
a straw fan and a straw
or grass basket. The
window -shade was made
from a grass or straw
mat. There are no
curtains at this window, I
just roll up the mat, a
bright rose ribbon holds it
and I can see the sunshine
and flowers without
curtains getting in the
way. In fact there are
only curtains on the
bedroom windows, the
rest have drapes that
open quickly to -the
outside world.
And that's the way I
like it. I'm a different
person in many ways
these days. For two days
I have been horizontal
oftener than I've been
Martha's gone south
upright - the reason? -
I've got jet lag - or
something - anyway, I'm
just plain pooped!
We stayed in Windsor
much longer than I had
planned - butthe weather
south of us was bad or a
bad storm was coming -
or - there were other
excuses. I was enjoying
visiting the grand-
children and cathcing up
on what their interests
were and all the things
they were doing, their
likes and hates - you
never dislike school, for
instance - you HATE it.
Luckily I didn't hear too
many "hates".
Finally - after two or
three false starts I
decided we were leaving.
Snow was coming a little
oftener and storms in the
south of us were either
coming or leaving, so
THAT was it! and Walt
thought I was crazy.
There was over three
inches of snow on the
ground and still falling
heavily - but I had packed
the car again and I
pushed him, grumbling
all the way into it and
away we went.
No problem at the
customs, the roads were
wet and traffic going very
carefully, but we left the
snow in Detroit with little
flurries now and then all
the way through Toledo.
From there on tc. Cin-
cinnatti the sun tried to
shine.
After leaving Dayton,
Ohio, the clouds were
really gathering and in
the Kentucky Mountains,
a radio announcer told of
the very bad storm that
was coming -- every ten
with Martha Rathburn
minutes his reports grew
more alarming and I was
just getting panicky for
fear of being caught in
those mountains.
Anyway I beat the
storm - or else it changed
direction - and that was a
big relief. BUT it had
turned cold and grew
much colder that night.
We made 'very good
time - actually - driving
eight hours before
stopping for the night.
We went through to
Venice after stopping at
Lindas'. Madeline had
insisted we stay over so I
left Walt there the next
day and unpacked the gar
and had everything ship
shape before going back
for him. THAT is the best
way to get things done.
So it has been great to
have people say they
were glad to see you - and
mean it.
I had a big surprise
when I reached our place
- the sun was shining and
sky was blue and a blaze
of blue and rose mor-
ningglories nearly filled
the drive way UP one side
of the carport and across

to the roof -!
What a pretty sight and
I had planted just a small
root before I left inethe
spring. "
It's just crazy the way
things grow - and you
should see the planter in
front of the house -- FULL
of weeds! So that's the
way it goes.
I haven't pulled them
yet - but hope the things I
planted so carefully are
under there - somewhere.
Last nite I had hoped to
play shuffleboard (I WAS
tired - honestly!) but,
they needed a bridge
player so I filled in - had
lousy cards - but it was a
nice break. I sure miss -
already - our card games
in Goderich.
Had a flat tire - in the
trike, so hope to have
something more exciting
to talk about later. People
are shopping like crazy
but it doesn't feel like
Christmas to me.
° I hope you had a
beautiful parade and
Sarlta will later be good to
you. Best wishes and love
to you all - yu' all.
Martha.
