The steering com-
mittee for the MacKay
Centre for Seniors met on
Tuesday, December 11 to
receive reports by
several members on the
estimated - cost of non -
capital items for the
Centre.
These estimates were

Air Show sub-
committee chairman,
Dick Wright, presented a
short report on the for-
thcoming air show. He
stated.that arrangements
are progressing
satisfactorily and are in
keeping with the
proposed budget.
On a suggestion from
Reeve Eileen Palmer, the
committee passed a
motion that the Tourist
Committee and the
Economic Development
Committee be invited to
appoint one non -elected
member from their
committees to attend the

meetings on a regular
basis as a non-voting,

Hydro rates hiked

Hydro rates in
Goderich and surroun-
ding areas will be in-
creasing between 10 and
14 percent as of January
1, 1980.

nounced a rate increase

reason.
• The Goderich •• Public
Utilities Commission
' announed it would be
hiking its residential
hydro rate by 14.5 percent
in the new year to
compensate for the bulk
power rate jump.
Al Lawson, manager of
the utility, said the
Goderich PUC was
handed a 15.5 percent
increase in its bulk power
rate but said the utility
had managed to absorb
one percent of that.
A spokesman for
Ontario Hydro said rural
rates for power would be

once the utility turned
them on in the spring. He
suggested the utility find
out exactly how much
work it did on the units
before making any rate
changes.
MacMillan said he did
not know what the
present rate was based on
claiming it was set before
any present employees or
members of the com-
mission were involved in
PUC work. He said the
only "increases passed on
to the town were rate
hikes the PUC gave all its
customers. He said the
rate to the town was last
increased in 1975,'the last
time the utility increased
water rates.
Chairman Herb
Murphy said the flat rate
may be high when the
amount used by the town
is compared to what a
homeowner would use for
the same fee. But Murphy
added that $168 was too
low.
The commission
decided to increase the
rates charged the town by
the 18.18 percent it in-
creased wateer rates
earlier this year. The
hike brings the annual
charge to the town from
$168 to $198.54.
increasing an average of
10.5 percent in the new
year.
The new rural rate will
be 7.42 cents for the first
750 kilowatt hours of
hydro per month and 3.6
cents for all power used
_
Farm rates will be 8.4
cents per hour for the
first 250 hours of hydro
and 3.06 cents an hour for
an additional 9,750
kilowatt hours for the
month.
Residential rates in
Goderich will increase to
8.4 cents for the first 50
kilowatt hours per month;
4:2 cents for the next 200
kwh and three, cents per
hour for the remainder.
who kindly co-operated
with the committee.
This was one of the
requirements for ap-
plication for a Wintario
grant. Jim Moore,
Recreation Director, will
submit the application
form together with the
list of non -capital ex-
penditures as given in the
estimates.
Any Wintario grant
money must be matched
dollar for dollar in a fund-
raising campaign.
Although no
renovations can be made
in the MacKay Centre for
Seniors until a New
Horizons grant has been
received, various events
will be held in the hall in
the months to come. The
committee plans to hold
two events each month.
The •first event in the
New Year will be held on
Wednesday, January 9 at
7:30 p.m. This will be a
card party with
progressive euchre and
500. There will be an
admission charge of $1. It
is hoped that all members
will come and bring their
friends.
There are now 74
people who are members
of the Centre for 1980. It is
very important to have as
large a membership as
possible. Membership
fees of $2 must be handed
in •as soon as possible.
They can be given to any
member of the com-
mittee or to the mem-
bership conveners, Ellen
Smith and Bea Sparling.
A seminar will be held
early in the New Year.
This will be arranged by
the committee and
anyone who is interested
in the organization of the
Centre may attend'. _
Richard Hewitt,
representative of the New
Horizons Program will be
a guest speaker. The date
of this seminar will be
announced in the local
paper.
To you, sincere greetings and
thanks ... with every good wish that the
joy and delight of the Yuletide will be yours.
