HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-12-20, Page 15Discuss 75th anniversary at Kingsbridge BY DELORES Van OSCH On Wednesday evening, St. Joseph's Church choir participated in the annual Carolfest at the United Church in Lucknow. Choir director was Bill Van Osch and organist was Denise Dal- ton. Gene Frayne was the soloist in the carol, "Jerusa- lem". Last Thursday evening a meeting was held in the Parish Hall with Father Den: tinger and interested parish- oners to discuss the 75th anniversary of St. Joseph's Church, which is to be held the last weekend in July. Various committees were set up. Last Thursday was a Pro- fessional Activity day at St. Joseph's School. The teach- ers remained at the school all day, which gave the parents a chance for parent -teacher interviews held in the after- noon and early evening. The sixth meeting of the Area Seniors Committee was held recently in the Parish Hall with Mrs. Bernadine Kinney presiding. Mr. Rob- ert Hewatt, representing the New Horizons Organization was again present. The New Horizons is a program set up in 1972 by the Department of Health and Welfare. The program is to encourage Senior Citizens to become more involved in their com- munity°jand to share their interests and skills in pro- grams of their choice, there- by benefiting themselves and their community, with em- phasis on local area needs. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Farrish spent the weekend in Detroit where an early Christmas gathering of relatives was held. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver McCharles visited in London for a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Hartley MacTavish. Mr. MacTavish, formerly of Ripley, has retired from his position with C.P.R. and has returned to London from Montreal where he has lived for the past number of years. The offering was received by Mrs. Oliver Anderson and Mrs. Maurice Bean and dedicated with prayer by Mrs. Haines. A solo, Dear Little Stranger, was sung by Mrs. Eleanor Bradnock accompanied by Mrs. Donald Haines. A reading, Let's Think of Christmas was read by Mrs. Kenneth McDougall. Mrs. Tom Jardin_ sang the song, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Mrs. Haines expressed her appreciation for the support that she had received the past two years as the U.C.W. president. She also thanked the leaders of the two groups. Mrs. Dorothy Grange expressed the thanks of the U.C.W. for, Mrs. Haines' leadership. Mrs. Gordon Gross read a letter from the U.C.W.'s foster child in Publeito, Costa Rica telling how Christmas is celebrated in that country. Mrs. Oliver Anderson reported that the support had been paid forthe coming year. A delicious Christmas smorgasbord -lunch with -- punch was enjoyed by all, Around 60 persons were present. the Quebec team, has been traded to the Maple Leafs. The Free Press stated David as being a Wingham native, but we can claim David as our neighbour in Lochalsh. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Finlayson and family of Sarnia spent the weekend with Mrs. Gordon Finlayson. The smypathy of the community is extended to the family of the late Frank MacLennan who passed away Saturday night. W.M.S. The W.M.S. of Ashfield church met Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Ewan MacLean. Their annual Christ- mas pot luck luncheon was enjoyed by all and the program that followed was conducted by Mrs, Jim West. Mrs. Gordon Finlayson conducted the business part of the meeting.
