Contractors to wait
BY JEFF SEDDON
Goderich town council
will decide at its first
session of 1980 if it will
overturn a decision by the
town's planning board
concerning a rezoning
application.
Wedlock and Dunlop
Ltd., a Gaderich firm
renovating a Britannia
Road residence, applied
to planning board in
November to have the
property changed from
residential to com-
mercial. The firm wanted
the change to permit the
home to be sold to .
professional people
wanting office space.
Planning board held a
public meeting early in
December and after
hearing objections from
neighboring property
owners recommended to
council the rezoning be
denied.
The denial meant
Wedlock and Dunlop
needed a two thirds
majority of council in
favor of the project to
have it approved. Bill
Wedlock, a spokesman
for the firm, sought that
majority at the last
council session.
Wedlock told council he
and his partner Brian
Dunlop respected neigh-
bors of their Britannia
Road property and had no
intention of spoiling the
value of that property.
VredIock told" council
the application for a
z.oninp change was
designed to give the
owners more flexibility to
sell the property. He said
the zoning change would
allow a professional, such
as a doctor, lawyer,
dentist or accountant, to
buy the property and
establish a business.
He said the property
was in the middle of a link
from the core area to the
shopping malls south of
Goderich and could
provide a type of link
between the two land
uses.
He told council his firm

Cutting 240 trees ok with Elsa
Town council learned
recently that town works
crews will be busy most
of the winter cutting
down 240 dead trees in
town.
Town works and
engineering foreman
Stan Meriam told council
his crew would be
spending most of the
winter plowing snow and
cutting down trees. The
tree cutting project
prompted works and
engineering chairman
deputy -reeve Bob Allen to
note he understood the
Public Utilities Com-
mission was replacing its
bucket truck . suggesting
the town could purchase
the old unit and use it for
tree trimming. Allen said.
the committee will be
meeting with PUC and
intends to ask if the
commission would be
interested in selling the
unit to the town. ,
He said the unit would
make tree cutting a great -
deal simpler and quicker.
He added that the unit
would be placed at the
disposal of the com-
mission should it be
needed.
Councillor Stan Profit
quipped it was "'nice to
see Elsa (councillor Elsa
Haydon) and Stan on the
same wavelength on this
one".
Haydon, who con-
stantly guards against
needless cutting down or
trimming of trees in
town, told council the 240
trees had all been
carefully inspected by the
parks advisory com-
mittee and all were
"definitely dead".
Students from kindergarten through grade 4 at St. Josephs School
Kingsbridge presented the nativity scene as their contribution to
the school's annual Christmas concert. The concert was
presented on Tuesday. (photo by Dave Sykes)
