ro pole signs
council PUC compromise on hy
BY JEFF SEDDON
The Goderich Public
Utilities Commission and
town council appear to
have come to terms over
the placement of street
signs on PUC hydro
poles.
Some of the signs will
stay and some will come
down.
The commission
learned at its last session
that an informal session
between works com-
missioner Ken Hunter,
PUC manager Al Lawson
and employees of the
town and the utility had
all but resolved the issue.
Lawson told the utility
matters became a little
tense in the meeting but
once feelings were made
known by both the town
and the PUC matters
were resolved.
Lawson told the
commission the town and
utility had agreed on the
placement of certain
signs in town keeping in

mas."
"Oh yes," whispered
David. "I see now that
without Christ, there can
be no joy and peace and
no contentment."
"You're right," said
the voice. "That's
because God's love for
people came to earth
through the Baby Jesus,
the very one who would
grow to be a man and
would be nailed to the
cross to take the punish-
ment for the sins of the
• entire world, forever.
Because of Him, the
things of this life can't
destroy man's happiness
because God's peace
makes it all seem so
unimportant."
"And I learned that
because siomebody's
heart is filled with un-
necessary cares and
worries now, it doesn't
have to remain that
way," David. said in his
bubbliest voice. "If you
know that' .happiness
comes only from God and
believe that Christ Jesus
is the flesh and blood
visible sign that God
wants everyone to have
His happiness and peace
and contentment; your
heart will change,."
Now the congregation
was h-u.shed-a-ad- th-e
minister opened the
Bible. '
"And she brought forth
her first-born son, and
wrapped him in swad-
dling clothes, and laid
him in a manger;
because there was: no
room for them in the
inn.,,
"Heart of Christmas,"
David whispered, "will
you visit my mom and
dad and my sister and my
brother before you leave?
I want them to un-
derstand too."
"I'm sorry David,"
said the voice. "I have to
go now. But you can help
them to understand. You
,can be an example of
what a Christmas heart
can do for somebody."
"Me?" asked David,
"I'm just a kid. I could
never make them un-
derstand."
"With God's help,
anything is possible," the
voice reminded David.
"Think about it. Nobody
in Bethlehem understood
what was going on that
night. that Jesus was
born. Everybody thought
it was just another baby
come into the world. But
God had a purpose for
this baby, His Only Son.
Today, hundreds of years •
later people still bow
down to worship The
Christ Child. That's
because people like the
shepherds didn't hesitate
to tell others about what
they had seen and heard.
And you, David, can do
.the very same thing."
"And the shepherds
returned, glorifying and
praising God for all the
things that they had
heard and seen, as it was
told unto them," the,
minister concluded:
David nodded his head
and .grinned. . What a
happy Christmas` Eve
this was turning out to be.

mind the concerns of both
parties. He said in some
instances the town would
be fighting a losing battle
putting signs on separate
poles. He said -town
foreman Stan Meriam
pointed out that any poles
placed in front of the post
office would only last a
few days before cars
pulling into parking
spaces knocked them
over.
Lawson said Meriam
and hydro foreman Evert
Middel would be going
over the placement of
signs in town and
deciding which could stay
on poles and which would
come down. He said the
agreement was a com-
promise and hoped that
the commission and
council would agree to
the settlement.
He pointed out that the
signs that caused all the
furor in the first place
turned out to be the least
problem. He said no
parking signs mounted on
hydro poles near
Champion service on
Victoria Street were
virtually ignored by
motorists adding it didn't
appear to matter what
they were mounted on.
The manager said he
had instructed hydro
employees with the PUC
not to climb any poles
without , first removing
the signs. He said if the
worker failed to remove
the 'sign and injured
himself on it the com-
mission would be liable.
He added that if
necessary the works crew
for the town could
remove the signs prior to
work being done and
would replace them once
the work on the pole is
completed.
