Winter is good time for sports pics
If you want to take good
sports pictures, take a tip
from a pro. The key is
learning to anticipate
spontaneous action and
then reacting quickly to
record the activity on
film.
Nancie Battaglia, a
photo -journalist and the
photo coordinator for the
Lake Placid Olympic
Organizing Committee,
says, "you have to un-
derstand a sport or
athletic contest before
you can anticipate a
decisive moment and
then capture it with your
camera."
Her advice applies to
Olympic class com-
petition, a ski meet
between two high school
teams, or a speed skating
race held during a winter
carnival.
Sports pictures should
illustrate and highlight
an event's excitement or
athlete's erformance
Stop -action photos can
freeze fast -paced activity
but don't always show the
speed involved in the
sport. However, stop -
action does show the
athlete's stress, strain
and form.
The opposite of stop -
action is the action photo
that shows a blurred
image streaking in front
of a blurry background. It
conveys motion and
movement, but little else.
There are a few
techniques a
photographer can use to
add life to stop -action
pictures and increase the
clarity of action photos.
When a photographer
moves in close to the
subject and snaps' a
nearly head-on shot of the
winter athlete, the photo
records the competitor's
facial expression, flying
snow and ice, even feet
off the ground. These
elements clearly show
the viewer the intense
action of the sport and the
reaction of the athlete.
Panning with the
camera is another ef-
fective way to record
sports action. In this
instance, the skier,
skater or hockey player is
clearly visible against a
blurred background. A
pan shot spells speed and
action.

Getting the best run for
the money means a lotto
a skier- these flays/ Of
course, when trying to
stretch your money on
the ski hill, value depends
on whether you want to
boogie on the slope or
boogie after dark in the
bar.
For the Ontario
schusser looking for the
steepest run at the
cheapest -lift rate, the
best bargain is Calabagie,
Peaks in the Ottawa area.
The hill has a vertical
drop of 750 feet and the
weekend lift fee is only $9.
The steepest run on a
non -private club is a tight
38 degrees, Wilson's
Wiggle at Georgian
Peaks near Collingwood.
The drop is a cool 820 feet.
There's a stiffer one at
Osler ,pluffs, but that's a
private club.
Georgian Peaks'
weekend lift ticket fee is
$13 and ties with neigh-
boring Blue Mountain as
the highest in the
province.
Big Blu.e may not have
the steepest run, but it
hasa lot going for it. The
area is the .largest in
Ontario with the greatest
number of runs and lifts
and bars— and people.
And when it comes to
its ski school, forget the
king -of -the -hill routine.
Blue now has a queen.
Lynn Warll is ski school
director. Nice cliange-for-
the guys, but don't
despair girls, there are
plenty of,. handsome,
young male instructors
around, waiting to show
you how to grind a
snowplow.
If you're- looking for
apr.es-ski action, Blue has
it. They've made ad-_
ditions to Big Baby- Base -
Lodge and renovated and
added capacity to
Bluegies, their disco.
If you insist on skiing
all day and part of the
night, Blue will ac-
commodate you. Skiing
under the lights has been
added on two runs, Big
Baby and the 0 hill.
A dollar cheaper at $12
on the weekend are two of
the province's try -harder
areas, Barri-e's Hor-
seshoe Valley and
Kimberley's Talisman.
Each has good in-
termediate skiing, roomy
runs- for beginners, good
ski schools and
restaurants.
At $11 is Huntsville's
Hidden Valley and three
other Barrie resorts.
Hidden Valley's on -the -
hill 'Holiday Inn will have
added attractions for non -
ski ,addicts — an indoor
pooplus squash and
ra utball courts.
•D'eerfrdrs-t-- - Inn, whose
guests ski Hidden Valley,
has revues and a new
'snowmobile safari.
The ' Barrie -area
resorts with $11 lift fees
on the weekend are Mt.
St. Louis, with its new
500 -foot hill and new
triple chair, and Moon-

added to its snowmaking
ability.
St. Louis has the better
trails system. Moonstone
is generally quieter.
Medonte, across the
road from Horseshoe,
also has pegged its,
weekend lift rates at $11
this season. This will be
its first full winter of
operation on a daily
basis. Best news is that
the chalet space is almost"
double.
It costs $10 on
weekends at Thunder
Bay's Candy Mountain
and Loch Lomond. These
areas each have great
Verticles and runs. The
drops are between 730
and 800 feet and the runs
are almost 8,000 feet long.
Candy ,has opened two
new runs to add to the
excitement.
format or 35mm camera,
frame the subject in the
viewfinder and keep it
centered there by slowly
pivoting at the waste as
the action passes. And
remember, as you pivot,
to gently and steadily
squeeze the shutter
release.
The camera must be
moving at the same speed
as the athlete to ef-
fectively freeze the action
of the subject and blur the
background.
Ms. Battaglia also
recommends you select
film for the type of
lighting conditions you're
shooting under. She uses
Ektachrome 64,200 and \
Kodachrome 64 slide
films or Kodacolor II film
for pictures on bright,
clear days when the snow
throws off a strong
reflection.
On overcast or cloudy
days she prefers high-
speed Kodacolor 400 film
for prints and Kodak
Ektachrome 400 film for
slides.
Here are some ad-
ditional sports photo tips
from Eastman Kodak
Company, the official
., photo consultants for the
1980 Olympic Winter
Games.
Carefully compose the
picture in the viewfinder
before you squeeze the
shutter release. Include
color uniforms, neutral
backgrounds and a
central point of interest.
Dress warmly and
follow your camera
dealer's advice on win,-
terizing a camera.
Take along extra film,
batteries and gear so you
catch a full day of
competition on film.
Take your favorite
action photos to a camera
dealer and order copy
negatives or
enlargements.
