Sun and surf lure,, many south
The winter season has
its own special spirit.
After the leaves have
been blown off the
branches and are covered'
with the luster of an
ethereal snowfall, it is a
season to truly enjoy
rather than endure.
Admittedly, there a
gloomy days when..the
stinging cold and in-
conveniences make us
long for the sunny days of
summer.
If you're the type who is
prone to enduring rather
than enjoying there are
Plenty of escape routes.
Winter vacations.
Winter vacations to
Hazy, sunny tropical
stands have increased in
•)opularity among
'anadians and are a
,.:ommon escape during
the cold months. And the
)rices and options are
luring and almost en-
dless. •
Gerry Wise of .the
Coach House Travel
Service in Goderich
explained that Florida,'
the Caribbean Islans, the
Bahamas and Hawaii are
popular winter havens for
vacationers. And the
package tours now
available won't drain the
life savings.
`-In -Go der itir- -the-
people go for a bit of
everything but the
majority go for package,
trips because of the
convenience and price,"
Wise said. "Some people
change vacations from
year to year but many
like a place and go back
again."
All package tours of-
fered depart from toronto
;and include "airfare,
accomodation, transfer
Ind in some cases meals.
The cheapest winter
'scape is Florida where a
)ne week stay on the Gulf
Coast starts at $269 in-
cluding airfare and ac-
comodation per person.
Many area residents still
make a winter trek to
Florida by car but that
takes time and the
availability of 'gas is a
major problem.
"Two people driving to
Florida won't save
money and the gas
situation has increased
the air business," Wise
said. "If you're driving
you need at least two
weeks where a flight will
get you there in three.
hours."
Children's rates are
available for family
holidays but bokings for
the march break should
be done well in advance.
Now there may be little
chance of finding ac-
comodation.
The weather in Florida
can be chancy at times
but the best savings can
be realized in January if
you're thinking of slip-
ping away. January is
traditionally a slow
month for vacations and
price -wise it's a good
time to travel south.
Another popular
vacation spot is the
Bahamas where a week
can cost from $300 to $500
depending on the place
and accomodation.
There are weekly
departures from October
to mid-April and the
accomodation can vary
from hotel to apartments
with tennis and golf
available.
Mexico,and in par-
ticular Acapulco, is at-
tracting winter tourists in
hordes and a one-week
stay can cost as little as
$379 or up to $525. The
rates here are basically
