Are you looking for a unique book to give a reader on
your Christmas list; a book about one of the great
Canadians of the 20th century and indeed one of the
great men of our time? -
McClure: Years of Challenge, by Munroe Scott, a
free-lance writer from Owen Sound, may be the
perfect choice.
Bob McClure retired as moderator of The United
Church of Canada in 1971. At that time he said:
"Don't put wings on me. I'm no angel.. I'm a gutter
wallah."
In Anglo-Indian idiom, from the days of the British
.raj, a'wallah is a person or thing employed about or
concerned with something.
Dr. Robert Baird McClure has been a number one
wallah for 'most of his life and he's been in many a
gutter. He refers to himself as a "foxhole Chritsian--
not an office Christian."
The famed missionary -doctor spent most of his
working life on the church foreign -mission field. His
story is told warmly, feelingly and in minute detail by
Mr. Scott in a two -volume biography (there was too
much material for one book). A Research Council of
Canada grant financed Mr. Scott's foreign travel for
the McClure biography.
The first volume, McClure:, The China Years, was
published in 1977. It covered the first 48 years of the
medical missionary's life, from his birth in November
of 1900 in Portland, Oregon where his mother lancled
after fleeing from China during the Boxer Rebellion,
to the rise of Ctimmunist China and the eviction of
Christian missionaries from the country.
The second, McClure: Years of Challenge, just out,
continues his engrossing story through three years on
the Gaza Strip, 14 years in India, two and a half years
as United Church moderator (McClure is the only
layman ever elected to that office) and subsequent
service in Southeast Asia, Peru, the Caribbean and
Zaire, Africa. They were years of Christian service
with few financial rewards, packed with adventure
and hardship.
In both' books, Mr. Scott presents a fascinating
picture of the life and times of the countries and
cultures in which McClure worked. Volume' I' was
based on. Canadian research and interviews with
`McClure and others. For Volume 'II, Scott travelled
much of the world for on -the -spot "digging".
McClure, known as the "red-headed Whirlwind" in
China, comes through as a brilliant surgeon and
missionary with theological ideas not always in tune
with his church. He was ruthless with inefficient
assistants and had an abrasive tongue but his com-
passion for the world's needy was boundless.
Operating -room hours in the mission hospital -at
Ratlam, central India, ' where McClure was chief
surgeon for 14 years were not good times for social
visits.
He once was interrupted during an operation by a
nurse announcing that the local Roman Catholic
- mother -superior was paying a visit. McClure said:
"Tell mother superior to go to hell." The nurse
rephrased the message. " -
' McClure began his working day in -the operating
room with prayer and his breakfast by putting a slice • The Reverend Robert
of bread in the toaster and then reading a passage Crocker conducted the
eai's of

from a religious pamphlet and saying grace in
precisely the time it took to make the toast. He per-
mitted no one else to ask the blessing because an
Anglican prelate had once prayed so long the toast had
burned.
Both The China Years and Years of Challenge are
packed with such anecdotal material.
On the foreign field, McClure always travelled third
class on trains or afoot or by bicycle. He couldn't see
"wasting" church money on , what he ' considered
unnecessary luxuries.
At home, as United Church moderator, he not only
travelled economy class or commercial aircraft but as
"standby", waiting in line for an available seat for
that was even cheaper.
He turned down the mod'erator's $16,000 -a -year
salary, accepting only about $5,000, the amount he
would have received in pension had he retired at the
age of 65. That prompted a churchman to say that The
United Church of Canada may havehad a better
moderator but it had never had a'cheaper one.

Church scholars
explain gifts for Christ
They (the wise men)
saw the young child with
Mary his mother, an-
d...presented unto him
gifts: gold, frankincense,
and myrrh."
Matthew 2:11
St. Matthew tells that
the Wise Men selected
these exotic treasures,
above all others, as their
special offerings to the
baby Jesus, They were
the first Christmas gifts
of all.
The gifts brought by the
Three Kings all had
magical associations:
gold for the sun mystery,
frankincense as the
smoke -maker, and
myrrh, the healer. The
Wise Men were' also
believed to have had
occult powers.
The Magi, kneeling in
tribute, express the love
and awe Christ evokes in
all who believe in Him.
The Bible names the
gifts...gold, frankincense
and myrrh. Each has its
obvious worth; there are
rich, symbolic meanings
as well.
Church scholars
consider the gold to mean.
love or Christ as Kirig of
the World; the
frankincense; prayer or
Christ as the King of
Heaven; the myrrh,
suffering or a symbol of
Christ's approaching •
sacrifice.
The Bible does not
mention containers for
the gifts, artists 'over the
centuries have' created
'them. A casket holds the
gold coins, a vessel for
the frankincense, an urn
for the myrrh.
Today people easily
recognize the value of the
gold, but they are not as
familiar with the value of
frankincense and myrrh.
These two aromatic
resins, used in making
incense, were very costly

at the time of the Birth of
Christ. To this day they
are used at many
Christian altars.
An old poem which
expressed the ancient
belief that "incense owns
a deity neigh" is further
evidence that frankin-
cense and myrrh were
worthy gifts for the
Prince of Peace.
