B
d Booster Club takes shape at GDCI
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
Music is about to get a
boost at G.D.C.I.
Al Mullen and Hugh
McGregor, music
teachers at the' high
school, are in the process
of organizing what they
call a "Band Booster
Club".
The purpose behind the
club is to support and
encourage musical ac-
tivities in the school and
throughout the cqm-
munity. Club members
would assist with concert
arrangements, including
such things as ad-
vertising, ticket sales and
supervision. They would
also hold fund raising
projects to help finance
band trips, uniforms and
other expenses not

The club is aimed at
parents of students,
enrolled in the music
program . at G.D.C.I.;
former students who once
took part in the music
program ; and other
adults in the community
who are simply in-
terested in seeing music
thrive and grow in
Goderich. It will, then, be
an adult organization.
At present a mailing
list of prospective
members for the club is
being assembled. Anyone
interested in joining. who
is not contacted per-
sonally, can get in touch
with Mr. Mullen or Mr.
McGregor at the school at
any time.
Early in January there
will be an inaugural
meeting to elect officers
and to decide to some
extent on the purpose and
direction of the club.
Mr. Mullen and Mr.
McGregor feel that a
parental or adult club is
needed so it can handle
the organizing and paper
work and let the students
and teachers "get on with
the music".
They do not want it tO
seem like they are trying
to shirk off work them-
selves. They feel a
booster club will give the
students "a fairer shake"
and "a better musical
experience".
They would like to see
more students involved in
the music program at
G.D.C.I. At present there
are about 105 students in
the four different high
school bands and about 25
students and teachers in
the Sing Out choir under
the direction of Mrs.
Eleanor Robinson. The
bands are co -curricular
and the choir is an extra-
curricular activity.. -- -
Mr. Mullen handles the
G.D.C.I. .,Grade 9' batt4l
and the concert band for
Grades 11 to 13. Mr.

intermediate band for the
Grade 10s and the stage
band for Grades 10 to 13.
Some dedicated students
overlap in these bands.
All the G.D.C.I. bands
have busy schedules lined
up before Christmas and
after.
On Tuesday, December
11 at 9:15 a.m. the in-
termediate band per-
formed at St. Mary's
School and at 11 a.m. the
same morning it per-
formed at Colborne
Central School.
On Friday, December
14 at 9:15 a.m. the conce:t
band will perform at
Robertson Public School
and at 11 a.m. the same
morning it will perform
at Holmesville Public
School.
The other elementary
schools in the area will
hopefully be visited by
the bands sometime too.
The visits to the
elementary schools \are
partly educational, partly
entertainment and partly
public relations work on
behalf of G.D.C.I. and the
music department which
hopes to interest those
students in the feeder
schools in the music
program there.
On December 18, the
intermediate band will
perform a concert at the
Bluewater Centre at 2
p.m. Then, that evening
at 8 p.m., all the bands
and the choir will come
together to present a
.Christmas Music Night in
the small east gym at the
high school. This music
night is open to the public
and free of charge. It will
involve over 100 students
and its purpose is to
display to the public all
the music that is going on
`'in the school. It will even
feature some trio and solo
work.
On December 21, the
last day of school before
Christmas holidays, a
music assembly will be
held for the student body
by those enrolled in the
music program.
The Central Band of the
Canadian Forces will be
performing at Alumni
Hall in London on
February 5 and Mr.
Mullen and Mr.
McGregor plan to take all
the students in the music
program to see this
performance.
In April, they are
taking the imtermediate
and concert bands to
compete in the Kiwanis
Festival in London.
"We have been known
to win our sections in the
past occassionally," says
Mr. Mullen op-
timistically.
In May, the G.D.C.I.
bands and the choir will
come together again to
stage their annual spring
concert.
An exchange trip for
members of the in-
termediate and concert
bands is presently being
planned. The destination
is unknown at this time.
Mr. Mullen and Mr.
McGregor are pleased to
announce that there is
also a Grade 13 music
program at G.D.C.I. now
for the first time and It
can be used as a course
credit for university.
With music getting a
boost at G.D.C.L, the
whole community is
bound to benefit
