Need
Big
Brothers
The second annual
meeting_.. of. The .Goderich_
and District Big Brothers
Association was held in
the assessment office on
Wednesday, December 5
when officers and
directors for the coming
year were named.
Jim Mulhern is
president. Vice-president
is Mike Cox; secretary,
Dorothy Cornish;
treasurer Ernie
Crawford; directors,
Burns Ross, Craig Cass
and Bill Wilson.
The local Association
was formed just a little
over one year ago, and
now has six ongoing
matches, Big Brothers
(older teens or men) to.
Little Brothers (younger
boys from fatherless
homes).
The Goderich group is
one of many across
Canada. The Big Brother
is a volunteer who sees
the Little Brother on a
regular basis.
"There's no shortage of
Little Brothers," said
Jim Mulhern this week.
Little Brothers are
referred by mothers,
social agencies, schools,
public authorities etc. _..,..,,
There is a shortage of
Big Brothers, however,
and Mulhern urged
anyone who has the time
and the interest to get
touch with someone from
the Big Brothers
executive. An regular
advertisement in this
newspaper gives details
about contacting Big
Brothers by mail.
Anyone Who applies to
be a Big Brother or `a
Little Brother can be
certain the information
obtained is treated as
absolutely. confidential. It
is all reviewed by a social
worker.
The organization.is also
looking for financial
support from the com-
munity. While the group'
does not need a great deal
of money to operate,
some finances . are
necessary for ad-
ministration costs.
Mulhern said there
have been inquiries into a
Big Sister -Little Sister
organization, but the
matter is still under in-
vestigation for the Big
"Brothers Association
here. It will be topic at
the next meeting of the
group.
Big Brothers in
Goderich is "ready to go"
said Mulhern. He said the
basic organization ap-
pears to ,be functioning
well, and 'he loeks for
greater opportunity for
community service
during the coming year.

Students at Colborne Central Public School think
Santa will be stepping into the space age by the year
2000 and showed it on their float in the annual Santa
Claus parade Saturday in Goderich. The students also
think Santa's elves will be enraged by the move and
will protest the sale of the trusty sleigh that did the job
for so many years. (photo by Jeff Seddon)
