The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-12-13, Page 17:sT.ra r. wTa.bb`. ^-.fi • Sportsa Stealers drop 5-4 game to Listowel Listowel edged the Lakeport Steel bantams 5-4 in WOAA league play in Goderich, Saturday. The visitors piled up a 5-1 lead midway through the game and hung on although the Steelers fought back to within a goal late in the final period. Listowel scored three times in the first period, including two goals in the final two minutes of the period, to hold a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. David Gallow scored the lone Goderich goal in the first period from Brad Armstrong and Daryl Madge. Listowel increased their lead in the second period with two straight goals by Steve Cpnners, his third and fourth of the game. Goderich trailed 5- 1 half way through the second period but got back in the game. . with -second Peri'od- goals by John Peters and Paul Day. The Steelers pulled within one goal of Listowel late in the final period on an unassisted goal by Brad Armstrong but were unable to notch the tying goal. Goderich enjoyed several manpower ad- vantages as Listowel was assessed nine inor penalties in the period compared to five for Goderich. Overall, Listowel was tagged with 26 minutes in minor penalties plus a five- minute major while goderich was nailed with 11 minor penalties. This Saturday the Steelers will play a 9.30 a.m. game in Wingham and Thursday, December 20 they will play a return match in Listowel. Their next home game is Saturday December 22 against Mitchell. Thursday in Clinton they played their first league game of the season, blasting the Redmen, 62-24. The Vikings then travelled to Owen Sound Friday for a pair of exhibition games which they split. The Vikes lost 65-48 to Westhill, but defeated OSCVI, 76-66. Finally, the Vikes played their second league game here Monday, easily defeating the Listowel Lords, 71-31. Coach Phil Bugler's Vikings now have a record of 5-1 overall, and are12-0 in league play. Dennis Donnelly had 23 -points to lead -the -Vikings - over Parkhill. Phil Aubin and Jim Costello had 10 each. Mark Alexander and Ted Doherty threw in six points apiece while Mike Murphy had four. Andy ' Moore, Doug Cruickshank and Rob McDonald -Thad two points apiece. Doug Hodgins led Parkhill with 13 points. Against Clinton, Donnelly was once again top man with 16 points. Phil Aubin added 14 and Andy Moore had 10. Ted Doherty and Mike Murphy had Sial each, Doug Cruickshank .. had four and Mark Alexan- der, Rob McDonald and Joe Moore contributed two points each. In their loss to Westhill, Tennis Dolinelly and Andy Moore were Vikings in double figures with 17 and • 12 points respec- tively. Doug Cruickshank, Jim Costello and Phil Aubin had five points each and Mark Alexander had four. Andy Moore and Jim Costello led the Vikings over OSCVI with 14 points apiece, Phil Aubin had 13 and Dennis Donnelly 11. Dan Freeman chipped in with eight points, Mark Alexander and Doug Cruickshank had six each and Ted 'Doherty had two. The Vikings disposed with Listowel with little trouble, led by Phil • Aubin's 18 points. Andy Moore had 11. Dennis Donnelly and Ted Doherty had eight each, Mark Alexander, Doug Cruickshank, Jim • Costello, and Dan Freeman all threw in six points, Rob. McDonald had two and Joe Moore had one point. The Vikings won two exhibition games in Owen Sound Friday, 66-40 over Westhill and 74-36 over OSCVI. In league IYlay, the Vikings routed Clinton 78-25 in Clinton last Thursday and overpowered the Listowel Lords 75-47 here Monday. -Dennis- Aubin •had 1$ -- points, points, Rob Plunkett 16 and Colin Alexander 12 in the victory over Listowel. Aubin also had 18 against Central Huron while Rob Plunkett had 14 and Mike Wedlock added 10 for Goderich: Bill Tugwell scored 13 for Clinton. The Vikings pressed and ran well against both. Owen Sound teams and were in' total charge of both games. Mike Wedlock and Dennis Aubin had 14 points each against Westhill. Colin Aleican- der, Kevin Adams and Ben Melick had six points each while Rob Plunkett and Scott Bell had four each. Chris Pitre, Joe Morrissey, Karl Krohmer and Dave McDonald all had two points for the Vikings. Against OSCVI Dennis Aubin again led with 16 points. Colin Alexander played a strong game and had 12 points. Mike Wedlock threw in eight. Rob Plunkett, Ben Melick and Scott Bell had six each while Kevin Adams had four. Jim MacDonald, Pave McDonald and Chris Pitre had two points each for coach Lynn Meyers' Vikings.
