The win was the eighth of the season for the Merchants against three losses and a tie for 17 points. Zurich is in second place despite having lost, only two games but they also have a couple games in hand on the Merchants. The Exeter Mohawks are also' challenging the Merchants for top spot. Paul Corriveau led the Merchants offensively with two goals and an assist. He scored both his goals in the second period and set up the insurance marker by Cam MacDonald. Rob Standen scored a first period goal for Goderich. Dave Graf chipped in with two assists setting up both of Corriveau's goals and Steve Chase also added two assists. On Thursday December 20 the Mer- chants will play in Hensall and Sunday, December 23 they will be in Zurich for a 2 p.m. game that could decide first place at the midway point of the schedule. The league suspends play for the Christmas break and Merchants next home game is January 7 against Grand Bend. Bridge club scores The Goderich Duplicate Bridge Club played a 12 table game following its annual Christmas party at the Legion hall on Tuesday evening. Cathy McDonald and Ray Fisher topped the north -south division with 73 points. 681/2 points. Auleen Curry and Iva Wood were fourth with 64 points. Eleanor Erskine and Fred Egener topped the east -west division with 79 points. (photo by Jeff Seddon) Atoms win, tie in two league games The Goderich Suncoast Atoms enjoyed a productive weekend in WOAA league play getting three of a possible four points in two games. .0n Saturday the atoms broke open a close game with five goals in the final period to defeat Exeter 9- 3 and Sunday they salvaged a 4-4 tie with Seaforth. Against Exeter the Atoms struck for five straight goals in the -final period to turn what had been a close game into..a 9-3_rout—Goder-ich -led• 3 -2 - after .g.n_epenod and 4,3_ after two periods of play. Scott Garrow led the Goderich offence with four goals and one -assist Signal -Stars tie Stratford League play with a 6 p.m. game in Lucan and their next home game is Sunday, December 23 The Stratford juveniles scored two goals in the final five minutes of" the game to gain a 4-4 tie against the Signal -Star Juveniles in exhibition play in Stratford Saturday. The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period of • play but. Goderich out- scored Stratford 3-1 in the second period to hold a 4-2 leading going into the final 20 minutes. Stratfrod responded to the challenge scoring two goals in a minute span to gain the 4-4 tie. Bill. Peters scored the first goal of the game on an unassisted effort early in the first period. Second period goals by . Rob Trebish, Larry Daer and Peters, his second of the game, lifted the Stars into a two -goal bulge after two periods. Belmont is 'the only • team to beat the Stars in league play. cling ram set to- go The town of Goderich will host an Ontario Cycling Association sanctioned cycling race this summer. Recreation director, Jim Moore, announced this week that the London Cycling Club has agreed to sponsor a race in Goderich as part of the Ontario Cycling AsSbciation summer cir- cuit. The race will held Sunday, August 17 and involve at least a two-mile route in town in- cluding Tfhe Square. The races will involve seven categories in- cluding, novelty races at the junior level for local cycling enthusiasts. Moore was excited about the races and said that sufficient prize money would attract professional riders from the United States and Toronto. The Atoms had a tougher time against Seaforth Sunday and needed a goal late in the secondperiod and one in the final period to come away with a 4-4 tie. Garrow put Goderich in the lead midway- tiff oug-h the second period with his second goal of the game but Seaforth responded with 'three straight goals in five minute's to hold a 4- 2 lead.
