Get. grant
for arena
KINCARDINE - Tiverton'
will have the grant
money it needs to go
ahead with much-needed
repairs to the arena in the
spring.
A Community Centre
grant of $31,385 has been
approved along with a
$17,192.50 Wintario grant.
The balance of the
estimated $68,770 needed
for repairs will come
from Tiverton's Cen-
tennial celebration
profits.
Work on the arena,
which was condemned in
1978, is expected to begin
April 1 and should be
completed by June 1,
1980.
Addition to
Vanastra
rec centre
CLINTON Tuckersmith
Township council,
denying a . request by
ratepayers for a
plebiscite, gave the go-
ahead last week for the
proposed $200,000 ad-
dition to the Vanastra
Recreation Centre.
The decision came
after a two hour closed
session of council during
which a recorded vote
was taken, with only one
councillor voting against
it. The motion instructed
the township clerk to
prepare the necessary
bylaw authorizing the,
proposed addition.
The quarter of a million
dollar project will
provide a larger exercise -
room, an activity room,
accessible washrooms,
showers and change
rooms, to provide a
progam for aquatics and
fitness for mentally and
physically handicapped
people.
Grants are expected to
cover 78 per cent of the
building costs and the
rest will have to be raised
locally.
In another motion,
council unanimously
agreed that all future
operating deficits, over
and above .the present
debenture payment at the
Recreation Centre, be the
responsibility of all the
taxable property of the
Township of Tucker-
sn•iith.
'82 plow
match
at Lucan
EXETER - The 120 -acre
farm of Allan Scott, west
of Lucan has been chosen
to host the site of the 1982
International Plowing
Match.
The decision came
after .a number of
meetings and
discussions, more than
the usual number •held,
and after six sites in
Middlesex County had
been inspected.
The actual .plowing.
match and parking
facilities will be located
on a• - number of farms
located west of Lucan and
South of Highway 4.
Included' in this category
are farms of Wilson
Hodgins, reeve of Bid-
dulph Township and
president of the Mid-
dlesex Plowmen's
Association.
According to Mr. Scott,
it has not been firmly
decided what other farms
in the area will be used,
but the association has
signed letters of intent for
close to 1,200 acres.
Wilson Hodgins,
plowing match com-
mittee member noted
that the 1982 site was
chosen because of the
easy availability of hydro
and water and the
closeness of Highway 4
and County Road 31.
"There are two heavy
power lines going right by
the properties right now
and this was"'a•big factor
in the final decision," he
said.
The last time the
International Plowing
Match was held in
Middlesex was in 1928
when it was held on the
Carmichael farm, east of
Highway 4, near the!"
Medway Creamery.
The 1980 match is being
;,»ld in Oxford County
and in 1981 in Simcoe
County, near Barrie. ,
