Christmas tree decorating is;farnily affair
Christmas is a won-
derful time of year, but it
can become expensive,
especially when it comes
to tree ornaments.
Why spend large
amounts of money to
decorate your Christmas
tree this year? Why not
make - your own
"disposable" decorations
cheaply, in the exact
color scheme you choose?
Your tree trimming
worshop can - and should
- involve the whole
family.
You qan make your
own chains and strings
for the tree out of con-
struction paper and
glitter. Simply havethe
children (even the littlest
ones) can help. They love
it.
Older children can cut
the construction paper
strips. Make them about
one inch wide and three
inches long.
This is the Barbapapa family. They are a gentle
toy, in sharp contrast to the numbers of violent toys
on the market. They are avilable this Christmas in
toy stores in many, many forms.
Think carefully...

best choice.
Ask the child what he or
she wants.
This doesn't mean, of
course, that you have no
say' in what the child gets
in the way of toys.
Guidance is necessary.
The development and
direction of the child is
still the parents'
resporrsibility and
children may oc-
casionally have to be told
a firm "no" and an ex-
planation of why the
answer is "no".
So before you buy, ask
yourself what. we'll call
"questions for toy
buyers". Does the toy fit
the age of the child? Does
the child' prefer action
toys or games? Will the
gift -keep the child oc-
cupied? Is it safe? It is
well made or something
junky' made to sell for a"
low price?
Does it need batteries?
This can be an expensive
operational cost for
parents, so make certain
to consider this aslYect
when giving a battery
operated toy.
And if batteries are
needed, are they supplied
with the toy or are they
an extra? If they come
with the, may, make cer-
tain t ey still work.
There's nothing more
disappointing for a child
than to get a great new
toy and not be able to play
with it right away
because there are no
batteries for it.
Maybe it wouldn't hurt
to buy an extra set of
batteries in the event the
child wears out one set
the first day or so.
This brings up another
good point to remember.
Test the toy in advance of
gift giving. Human
nature- being what it is,
some toys are bound to be
faulty, or have missing
parts. Try to avoid this
kind of frustration for the
child, too.

Little ones can paste
the ends together making
circles. Buy linking them
together before gluing,
you can make chains of
any length you prefer.
Then dad can spray the
chains with a light
adhesive available at any
notion counter and mom
can apply the glitter.
Or, if you are a little
more old-fashioned,
thread cranberries and
popcorn alternately on a
string and tie tiny green
and silver bows here and
there for accents. Looks
lovely.
Back to the con-
struction paper for the
ornaments. Cut out
angels and reindeer and
trees and candy canes
and stars wreaths. Use
white for angels and
stars, red for reindeer
and candy canes, green
for trees and wreaths.
Then spread glue along
the accent points - around
the reindeer's neck and
antlers for instance - and
sprinkle with glitter.
Or have the children
cut out Santas in red
construction paper. Then
spread glue in the shape
of a beard and fur and
stick bits of cotton batten
into the glue.
When the decorations
are finished, punch tiny
holes in them and hang
them with colored yarn
for extra decoration or
with thread if you want to
hide the hangers.
Using this method of
making decorations, you
can use just about any
theme you like. You
could, for very little
money, have a tree with
all red and white Santas
and red, white and silver
If you wanted your
decoration to be more
permanent, simply cut
two pieces of construction
paper and one piece of
cardboard exactly the
same size and shape.
Just for fun
The head of a cor-
poration, a rather ob-
stinate man, called his
executives on the carpet
one day. "Look," he
fumed, "you fellows have
got to get it on the ball. If
we have any bottlenecks
around here, I want you
to tell me where they are.
Is that clear?"
After the meeting, one
executive turned to

action toy that could fill the bill. Tobor is robot spelled backwards in case you
were wondering about the reason for the name.
another and said, -One
thing I've noticed about
bottles. The necks are
always at the top."
Glue the cardboard into
the centre and decorate.
And once" you start
decorating, you'll find
many interesting things
in the stores to add color
and excitement to your
tree.
Make it a real family
project, and have the
prettiest, most unusual
Christmas tree of your
life.
