When it comes to
selecting toys for the tots
on your Christmas list
each year, it is almost as
frustrating as choosing
for someone else the best
buy an- a -huge used ear
lot. Almost impossible.
It used to be so easy.
For little girls, you
bought a doll and for a
boy, you bought a tr-,:zit.
No fuss. No muss.
In the good old days,
kids didn't have much in
the way of things to play
with. And they didn't
know they were missing
out. Almost anything that
was new and shiny was
totally acceptable.
Not so today. Children
from a very early age are
well aware of what's
available from Santa's
workshop. There's such a
variety, in fact, that what
seemed like the most
favorite thing in mid-
November is old -hat and
undesirable by the first of
December.
It is no wonder that
Santa likes kids to write it
all down - in black' and
white - sothere's some
basis for argument when
the toy is found un-
satisfactory. In fact,
Santa goes to great
lengths these days to
explain to children that
once the order has been
placed for a super robot,
it can't be changed a
week or two later for a -
remote -control sub-
marine.
The Irwin toy company
took a very positive step
this Christmas. For
members of the Canadian
Community Newspapers
Association, the com-
pany's public relations
manager, E.G.Hirst,
prepared a series of
articles on toys and
games in general.
For instance, there was
an article about, toy
regulations, which are
tough in Canada. All
Canadian toy
manufacturers have to
comply with them.
For instance, The
Canadian Standards
Association sets down
rules for the protection of
children, that must be
fulfilled before it will
approve items, that
operate electrically.
Paint, enamels and
This is another game that is what toy manufac-
turers call a twist of fate game. The Payoff
Machine challenges players to get more plastic
balls out than they put in. Naturally, it meets.
Canadian toy standards to safety and strength.
lly before buying kids' toys
other coatings must be
non-toxic. Buttons are
subject to severe pull
tests. There are drop
tests, labelling tests,
stuffing tests, tests for
baby's rattle.
Eyes on stuffed toys,
toy vehicle wheels and
small similar items that a -
child could swallow are
frowned on. So are sharp
edges and ported wires.
A doll's hair must be
flameproof. Polybags
holding toys must not be
over 14 inches in
diameter. Science and
education sets come
under rigid controls.
Wood toys must not
splinter or have slivers.,
Cakes mixes for those
kiddy ovens must meet
food regulations, both in
Canada and in the United
States.
Toy manufacturers
believe that the best
possible indicator when
buying toys for a child is
the child's own opinion.
They advise parents to
"listen to the child before
you buy".
A good for instance
here, would be the little
granddaughter who asks
for an electric train from
grandpa. Grandpa can be
pretty certain she'd be
very unhappy with a doll
buggy,_ and- that 1 the
electric train is too high
priced for grandpa's
purse, the next best
choice would be a racing
car set.
Children have tastes in
toys, the toy manufac-
turers say, and those who
_buy toys for children
should be aware of the
tastes of the particular
children for whom they
are buying toys.
In her book "A Guide
To Parents" written after
talking ` with child
psychologists, toy
manufacturers and many
others, Irene Clepper
points out, "About the
dumbest thing any parent
can do is try to force a
child into a mold."
hich doll?
Does the little girl on your Christmas list want
adoll?
Chances are she will tell you exactly which doll
she wants. Maybe it will be LittleLorrie Walker,
a 24 -inch walking doll, Or a Kiss Me Baby that
smacks mommy on the check.
It could be a wetting doll or a drinking doll or a
doing doll. It may even be a doll that allows the
little mothers to take her temperature and listen
to her heartbeat. -
Maybe it is a ,fashion doll. Or a plain but
lovable cuddly doll.
And what -do you do if a boy on your shopping
list wants a doll for Christmas? Answer. Buy him
one. Dolls aren't necessarily bad for boys, even
baby dolls. And there are dolls that appeal to just
about everyone.
There are action dolls that would appeal to a
boy - like -the Six Million Dollar Man for instance.
For girls its the Bionic Woman.
Over the centuries, dolls have represented
good luck, love, good health, evil and com-
panionship and they have been used for
snuggling. They have always reflected the styles
of the time.
Today's' dolls are no different. They are ex-
cellent toys with an ability to teach and to en-
tertain.

So w1 -n buying toys for
the children on your list,
keep in mind the child's
tastes. How does the child
play in the house? Does
the child play mostly with
groups of children? Does
the child play mostly
alone? •Does the child
have a vivid
imagination? A
fascination with
homemaking?
Parents and others who
