Get ready right
this Christmas
BY THE REVEREND
MARVIN L. BARZ,
BEREA-BY-THE-
WATERSUTHERAN
CHURCH
People have many
• different ideas about
getting ready for
Christmas. For some it is
the buying (or selling) of
gifts. For some it is
planning and attending
parties. For some it is
travel and family
reunions.
All of the above things
can be expressions of love
and joy, both of which
ought to be very much a
part of what Christmas is
all about.
At the same time, the
emphasis on material
things, on partying and
get-togethers can blot out
the true meaning of
Christmas. There is a
higher Gift and a greater
reason for joy than that
which is found within
ourselves, and within our
worldly plans.
A number of years ago,
in a certain town, a
complaint was made that
some of the displays that
were set up, and some of
the music being splayed
was '' `too distressingly
theological". The truth is
that Christmas is first
and actually a religious
'and spiritual season. It
began- precisely because
of Theology. - which
simply means a 'Word
about God. It tells us that
God became one of us.
"The Word became flesh
and lived for awhile
among us." (John 1:14).
Christmas tells us that
a Child was born - Jesus
Christ - also' named'
Immanuel, which means
"God with us" - and that
this Child is called
"Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of
Peace". (Isaiah 9:6)..
That's why Christians
sing of a "Great and
Mighty Wonder", and
proclaim the Prince of
Peace. That's why we
have the Advent call to
get ready.
Advent means coming.
We think of the coming of
the Mighty God, the
Prince of Peace - past,
present, and future.
Jesus Christ, God's Son
came in the past, and He
came on a peace mission.
By His death and
resurrection He has
restored the broken
peace between God and
man.
And the Christ who
came to Bethlehem will
come again. At the end of
time He will come as
judge of all, and as the
great Deliverer to take
His people to eternal
peace and joy in His
presence.
This Jesus is still
coming to us today. He
comes now, through His
Word, the message of
Peace. His great gift is
still the gift of peace -
peace with God, peace of
conscience through the
forgiveness of sins.
Therefore the best way
to be ready for Christmas
is to observe the event as
God intended us to -
coming to Him in
humility, in confession of
our sin and need, in
hearing and reading His
Word, in speaking to Him
in prayer.
"And the God of love
and peace will be with
you..". (II Corinthians 13:.

A surprise party , was
I eld for Doug Crich who
has left to live in Toronto.
Mrs. Elsie Henderson
planned an impromptu
program. A lovely lunch
was provided by Elsie
and Sarah Carter. Doug
was presented with a pen
and pencil set as a par-
ting gift, in recognition of
his faithful service for the
past seven years. A sing
song followed, and the
evening was enjoyed by
all.
Saturday morning,'
Mrs. John MacDougall of
Blyth very graciously
carne 'to Huronview and
gave a piano recital. This
was much appreciated by
the residents, and` gave
them a chance to hear
some very fine music. If
weather permits, Mrs.
MacDougall plans on
coming back to play.
