GODERICH 524-7212 Slow ice hampers Industrial curling The 1979-80 Industrial League curling season opened last week with a test of endurance rather than finesse as each team struggled with extremely slow ice. The difficult ice was a major factor in AM &G Hospital No. 1 teams victory over the Champion Girls as Sylvia Bolan and associates were unable to conquer the ice while Ron Klages and his stronger team muscled their way to a 17- 2 triumph. Cam Bogie and the powerful Foresters avenged last year's loss to the Huron County ,.Health Unit by an- nihilating their opponents to the ,tune of 10-2. This match displayed some precise curling in the early going with Jim 14: wkins and Don Hunan showing the way but the wet ic reduced the game to basics in the final few ends. The Assessment Office, led by the fine curling of Dennis Lebrun and Jim Bell, caught Bruce Erskine and the Victoria and Grey unit on a bad night and handed them a 7-3 loss. Bill Hayward had a strong night for the Champion Sales Office as they dumped the Victoria Sweepers 5-1. Some key shots in the early action were the deciding factor as the final ends saw only blanks or a single point produced. Don Budnark's aggressive style made him the most noticeable if not the most accurate player on the unfortunate teacher foursome. Despite or perhaps •because of- the difficult ice, the first night of curling producedtwo exc iting extra end en- --cortinters n -- contest Ron Ritchie and the Victoria Hardrocks hammered out a hard- fought victory over Jim Bolan and the Champion office squadron. The final 4-3 score is a good indication of the eveness of these two teams. „It„ took „-ta.v,a extra ends- before last year's champions, Local 1863 would concede defeat to their old rivals, the GDCI Teachers. The teachers, led by the strong curling of Bill Worsell and Doug Bundy along with the clutch performance of Donna Doidge, fought back from a bad start to sneak past the former champions 6-5. Local 1863 skip, Jack Kellough, curled expertly in the early ends before the ice turned terrible and veteran player Tom ("Silent Broom") Profit was steady throughout the very close encounter. The Industrial League welcomed three new teams to this year's competition and two of the three began their season with victories. The Maitland defeated A.M.&G. Hospital No. 2, 6-1. Golfers Kay Duncan and Ardithe Brissette were outstanding for the winners while Jim Rourke and Elmer Taylor provided the Listowel Suncoast _ The "' Suncoast Suns Atoms had little"difficulty disposing of their B counterparts in exhibition play Saturday but found the going tougher ,in league play Monday.
