Sporting new uniforms on the weekend the Sailors earned three of a possible four points in a home and home series with the Lucknow Lan- cers in Intermediate C league play. • On Friday the Sailors dumped Lucknow ..6 2 in the friendly confines of the Goderich arena and Sunday they needed a third period goal to earn an 8-8 tie in Lucknow. The win and tie im- proved the Sailors' record to 2-2-3 for seven points in their first seven games. Dan Colquhoun played an integral part in Sailors' weekend success. figuring in all six Sailor goals Friday with a goal and five assists and adding a goal and three assists Sunday for a 10 - point effort. The Sailors came up with a fine effort Friday scoring one goal in the opening period, two in the second and adding three goals in the final period to clinch the 6-2 win. Dave Bartliff put the Sailors ahead with the only goal of the first period from Colquhoun and Scott • Parks. Lucknow tied the game a minute and a half into the second period but Colquhoun and Parks collaborated a minute later with Parks scoring the second goderich goal. Wayne Rau scored the third Goderich goal midway through the second period from Colquhoun and Bartliff to boost Goderich into a 3-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes. Lucknow agapn came within a goal of the Sailors scoring early in the third period but the Sailors responded with a goal by. Colquhoun and two by Rick Fremlin to claim the victory. Bob Hnatyk took care of the netminding chores for the Sailors. The teams abandoned defence Sunday with each team scoring four times in the first period and then settling for an 8-8 tie. The Sailors gave in- diCaLuV110 w i.. aping the game a rout in the first period scoring four goals in less than two minutes. But Lucknow, chipped away at the lead tying the score at 4-4 before the close of the first period and , outscoring goderich 2-1 in the middle period to hold •a 6-5, lead heading into the final period. Goderich outscored Lucknow 3-2 in the final period with Colquhoun scoring the tying goal on an unassisted effort with just over a minute left in the game. Scott Park led the Sailors offensively with three goals and two assists for a five -point effort. Linemate Colquhoun chipped in with one goal and three assists while Rick Fremlin added two goals and an assist. Ken Meriam and Paul Rau scored the other Sailor goals. On Friday the Sailors will play in Mount Forest and Saturday they continue on the road with a game in Elora. Their next home game will be Friday, December 7 against Milverton. Armstrong leads Bantams The Goderich Lakeport Steel Bantams enjoyed a productive week racking. up two wins in WOAA league play. In a game played in Goderich Saturday the Steelers thumped Wingham 7-2 and Monday they added their second straight victory with a 6-2 win over Mitchell in Mitchell. Brad Armstrong paced the Steelers attack with a three -goal performance in the 7'-2 win over Wingham Saturday. It was the second straight win over Wingham in the past week. On Monday the Steelers scored two goals in each period and limited Mitchell to two third period goals in recording their second win. Armstrong again paced the Steeler offence scoring four of the six goals. He opened the scoring after three minutes of play and linemate David Gallow scored before the end of the period to give Goderich g 2-0 lead. Armstrong completed his hat trick in the second period scoring the only two goals of the period. Mitchell got back in the game with a goal early in the final period but goals by Pete Stahl and Armstrong in a two- nllL u„ Jpan against Listowel aL� p.m. win for Goderich. Gallow also contributed a four -point effort on one goal and three assists. (photo by Dave Sykes) Bridge Club scores Merchants go on scoring spree in win Joanne Duckworth and Lee Ryan teamed up to take top honors in the North-South section of play at the November 27 meeting of the Goderich Bridge Club with a point total of 921/2. There were eight tables in play. Jean Cook and Verna Worthy were second with 84 points and mary Ted Doherty of the GDCI senior viking basketball team sinks a layup in a team practice session as Mike Murphy looks for a rebound. Betty and Ray Fisher took top spot in the East- West division with 861/2 points while Barb Howe and Marian Lane settled for second place with 80 points. Bill Bradley and A. Weerasooriya were third with 79 points. The Goderich Mer- chants went on a scoring spree in Intermediate C action against Kettle Point here Monday racking up a lopsided 12-1 win. , The Merchants scored three goals in the opening period, added a six -goal outburst in the second period and __ectru tecLth-e rout- with Vikifig-b4§ketb4140arris'� play Sarnia St.• Clair Friday The GDCI Viking basketball teams begin •their 1979-80 basketball schedule this Friday entertaining Sarnia St. Clair in three exhibition matches.: The games are the first of two pre -season mat- ches scheduled by the Vikings. The Junior and midget teams will play at 6.30 p.m. with the senior game going at 8 p.m. 'On Tuesday' 'December 4 the midgets "and seniors will play Parkhill and the first league game for all three teams will be in Clinton thursday, December 6. Last season was a phenomenal one for the basketball program at GDCI with all three teams laying claims to championships. Under the direction of Myles Murdock, the midgets enjoyed their finest 'season and cap- tured, the Huron -Perth championship. Lyn ,Meyers piloted a talented junior squad to a Huron -Perth cham- pionship with a 49-38 victory in the third and deciding game against Stratford Central. Stratford won the first game of that series but Goderich forced the deciding game with a 54- 52 win in overtime. The juniors advanced to the WOSSA semi-final before losing to medway 54-46. Phil Bugler's senior Vikings were the cin- derella team of the senior loop winning the WOSSA championship after losing the Huron -Perth final. Ironically the senior Vikings dumped Strat- ford Central in the WOSSA final after losing to them in the league championship. The Vikings beat Sarnia and, Woodstock in WOSSA play and earned the chance to avenge the earlier loss to Stratford as the two met in the final. Goderich won that game 63-62 as Bill Bar- wick sunk a free throw with three seconds" remaining in the game. As WOSSA champs the Vikes participated in the AA tourney in North Bay but lost both their games, 45-43 to North Bay and 64- 28 to Timmins. This season' the seniors will again field a com- petitive team. Although several players from last years team have graduated, Mark Alexander, Doug Cruickshank, Dennis Donnelly and Andy Moore will provide previous senior ex perierlce. The seniors will also be bolstered by a bulk of last years winning junior team with Phil Aubin, Ted Doherty, Rob MacDonald, Joe Moore, • Mike Murphy, Jim Costello ane(• Dan Freeman. Although many of these players lack senior' experience most of them have played two 'or three years of junior ball at GDCI. Lynn Meyers, who like Bugler has only three returnees on his junior team, is optimistic of their potential. Dennis Aubin,,._.Andy Masse and Mike Wedlock played for the juniors last season and will get some help from first-year plaaer David MacDonald. • The junior lineup will be 'bolstered by 12 members of last seasons championship midget team. The new players include Colin Alexander, Jim MacDonald, Kevin - Adams, Chris Pitre, Joe Morrissey, Scott Bell, Ben Mel ick• Rob Plunkett, John Leddy, Phil Grace and Karl Krohmer. The GbCI teams will play exhibition • games with Owen Sound, Sarnia, London and possibly Kitchener throughout the season aswell as,, par- . ticipate in area tour- naments. The teams played through a scoreless first period and Lucan took the lead with a goal in the first minute of play in the second period. That lead didn't last long however as the Stars struck for three straight goals in a span of one minute before the period • was four Minutes old. Greg Hallam then put Goderich ahead 30 seconds later from Stuart Crew and Doug Cruickshank and Hallam returned the favor setting up Cruickshank 20 seconds later to boost Gpoderich into 3-1 lead. The goals . came in a flurry however and Lucan responded with two goals in 12'seconds to tie the game at three just four and a half minutes into the second period. John Clement scored what proved to be the winning goal late in the second period with help from Kisch and Steve Lobb. Bill Peters scored an insurance goal in the final period to clinch the win. On Wednesday Goderich played in St. Marys and Sunday they will host Dorchester in a 2.30 p.m. contest at the Goderich and District Memorial' Community Centre. Whetstones win first game in CHHL play on last minute goal Rick • McLean's dramatic 'goal in the last minute of 'play powered._ Whetstone Jewellers to a 3.2 win over O'Brien's Meats in CHHL action Sunday morning. It was Whetstone's first victory of the vear after seven losses. Jim Ginn and Rick Whetstone scored the other goals while Fred Armstrong and Rick Sowerby countered for O'Briens. In other games, Sunset shut out Burger Bar 5-0 Sunday night for their ckth gtrnight win to, remain in first place at 7- 2. Wednesday Burger Bar (3-6) defeated O'Brien's (5-5) 5-3 but then dropped a 9-5 decision to Holmesville on Thursday. Holmesville is in second place with a record of 6.2.
