play Sarnia St.• Clair Friday
The GDCI Viking
basketball teams begin
•their 1979-80 basketball
schedule this Friday
entertaining Sarnia St.
Clair in three exhibition
matches.:
The games are the first
of two pre -season mat-
ches scheduled by the
Vikings. The Junior and
midget teams will play at
6.30 p.m. with the senior
game going at 8 p.m. 'On
Tuesday' 'December 4 the
midgets "and seniors will
play Parkhill and the first
league game for all three
teams will be in Clinton
thursday, December 6.
Last season was a
phenomenal one for the
basketball program at
GDCI with all three
teams laying claims to
championships.
Under the direction of
Myles Murdock, the
midgets enjoyed their
finest 'season and cap-
tured, the Huron -Perth
championship.
Lyn ,Meyers piloted a
talented junior squad to a
Huron -Perth cham-
pionship with a 49-38
victory in the third and
deciding game against
Stratford Central.
Stratford won the first
game of that series but
Goderich forced the
deciding game with a 54-
52 win in overtime.
The juniors advanced
to the WOSSA semi-final
before losing to medway
54-46.
Phil Bugler's senior
Vikings were the cin-
derella team of the senior
loop winning the WOSSA
championship after
losing the Huron -Perth
final.
Ironically the senior
Vikings dumped Strat-
ford Central in the
WOSSA final after losing
to them in the league
championship. The
Vikings beat Sarnia and,
Woodstock in WOSSA
play and earned the
chance to avenge the
earlier loss to Stratford
as the two met in the
final.
Goderich won that
game 63-62 as Bill Bar-
wick sunk a free throw
with three seconds"
remaining in the game.
As WOSSA champs the
Vikes participated in the
AA tourney in North Bay
but lost both their games,
45-43 to North Bay and 64-
28 to Timmins.
This season' the seniors
will again field a com-
petitive team. Although
several players from last
years team have
graduated, Mark
Alexander, Doug
Cruickshank, Dennis
Donnelly and Andy
Moore will provide
previous senior ex
perierlce.
The seniors will also be
bolstered by a bulk of last
years winning junior
team with Phil Aubin,
Ted Doherty, Rob
MacDonald, Joe Moore, •
Mike Murphy, Jim
Costello ane(• Dan
Freeman. Although
many of these players
lack senior' experience
most of them have played
two 'or three years of
junior ball at GDCI.
Lynn Meyers, who like
Bugler has only three
returnees on his junior
team, is optimistic of
their potential. Dennis
Aubin,,._.Andy Masse and
Mike Wedlock played for
the juniors last season
and will get some help
from first-year plaaer
David MacDonald. •
The junior lineup will
be 'bolstered by 12
members of last seasons
championship midget
team. The new players
include Colin Alexander,
Jim MacDonald, Kevin -
Adams, Chris Pitre, Joe
Morrissey, Scott Bell,
Ben Mel ick• Rob
Plunkett, John Leddy,
Phil Grace and Karl
Krohmer.
The GbCI teams will
play exhibition • games
with Owen Sound, Sarnia,
London and possibly
Kitchener throughout the
season aswell as,, par- .
ticipate in area tour-
naments.
