Stars streak
halted at six
The Goderich Signal -
Star Juveniles had their
winning streak halted at
six games Sunday after
dropping a 5-4 decision to
Belmont in Belmont.
The Stars had things
their own way through
the first- games of the
Shamrock League
schedule before they met
some tough opposition in
Belmont.
Goderich held the
upper hand through the
first half of the game with
the aid of several man-
power advantages.
Belmont scored the ?first
goal of the game but the
Stars responded with
three goals in a five
minute span and enjoyed
a 3-1 lead after one
period.
Larry Daer scored the
first Goderich goal and
linemate Roger Lewis put
the Stars ahead four
minutes later. The line
, clicked again just 20
seconds later with Lewis
setting up Daer for the
third Goderich goal.
Belmont pulled to
within a goal early in the
second period but Lewis
regained a two -goal bulge
for Goderich with his
second goal of the game.
But Belmont took over
from that point scoring
one goal in the second
period to trail 4-3 and
scored the only two goals
of the third period to„win
5-4.
There were plenty of
penalties called with
goderich being assessed
14 minors, two five
minute majors and a
game misconduct to Mike
Hodges. Belmont was
nailed for 15 minors and a
five-minute major.
Brian Shewfelt and
Mike Reynolds shared
the netminding duties for
Goderich.
This Sunday the Stars
will host Lucan in a 2.30
p.m. contest at the
Goderich and District
memorial community
Centre.
Lions
undefeated in
eagueplay
The Goderich Lions
Pee Wees remain un-
defeated in league play
following a pair of vic-
tories over the past week
in WOAA hockey action.
Thursday, the Lions
defeated'Wingham, 7-3, in
Wirigham . and Sunday,
playing at home, they
shutout .Clinton 7-0. The
Lions are now 5-0 in
league action. .
In Wingham, the Lions
got three goal per-
formances from both
Todd Graham and Trevor
Erb. Ken Huff scored the
other Goderich goal.
Scott Stokes and Brent
Williamson each had
three assists while single
assists went to Graham,
Erb, and Todd Jeffrey.
The Lions led 2-1 after
the first period and upped
their lead to 5-1 after two
periods. Each team
scored twice in the final
frame.
Doug Stephenson, Doug
McFar•lan. and Quinn
O'Donohue were the
Wingham'marksmen.
Sunday, the Lions
racked up their first
shutout of the campaign
in their win over Clinton.
Rob Dunn and Jeff Scott.
shared the duties in the
Goderich goal: The Lions
sandwiched a lone second
period goal•between three
goal outputs in the. first
and third periods to Win
handily.
Grant Garrow led the
Lions' attack with two
goals -and ,an assist.
Shawn Rahbek and
Trevor Erb each. had a
• goal and two assists.
Todd Graham chipped in
with a goal and an assist
while Peter Conlon and
Brent Williamson had one
goal each.. Scott Stokes
played steadily on
defence and had three
assists.
The Lions took their
first loss. of the season
here Saturday • in an
exhibition encounter with'
a strong Parkhill team,
losing 4-1. Lions manager
Bill Rahbek arranged the
game with Parkhill to
.give the Lions some
experience against
tougher opposition than.
their own . league
provides. Parkhill has
already defeated teams
from Stratford and
London and. showed their
strength here Saturd'ay..
The Lions opened the
scoring in the first minute
of the game when Grant
Garrow scored, assisted
by Scott Stokes, but from
there on, Parkhill. did the
scoring. Cam MacDonald
had two goals and Kirk
Campbell and Ted
Hodgins got the others-.
Coaches Dick Madge
and Bob Dick felt the
game helped to show
their team how some of
the mistakes they have
been making against
teams in their own league
but have gotten away
with, can be costly
against a better team.
The Lions meet
Listowel here Saturday at
5:30 p.m. and go to
Mitchell Tuesday for a
6:30 p.m. game. Both are
league games.
