A Place For Kids
Dinosaurs all gone
BY KATHRYN MACKAY
A dinosaur is a
creature that plodded,
swam, or flew on earth
thousands of years ago.
They Were the most
important animals living
on earth during a period
of time called the
Mesozoic Era. The
Mesozoic Era ended
about 65,000,000 years
ago, so don't worry, there
are no dinosaurs living
today.
There were different
types of dinosaurs years
ago, just as there are
different types of animals
on earth today. Dinosaurs
are divided into two main
classes or types. Some
dinosaurs acted and
moved like reptiles. We
know this because their
pelvis bones, which are
like hip bones, were like a
modern day reptile's.
These dinosaurs belong to
the 'Saurischia' class.
Some dinosaurs acted
more like birds — they
had pelvis bones that look
a bit like a modern day
bird's.These dinosaurs
are of the 'Ornithischia'
class. An ornithologist is
a person who studies
birds.
These two types of
dinosaurs roamed the
earth for about
100,000,000 years during
the Mesozoic Era. At the
beginning of the present
era, the Cenozoic Era,
they became extinct and
were replaced by animals
that we are more familiar
with.
The largest
'dinosaur was
Brontosaurus. This
creature was about 70
feet long and weighed
from 35 to 50 tons. W''hen
they walked their feet
would sink into the wet
muddy ground of the
marshes they lived in.
These dinosaurs were so
heavy that they wouldn't
be able to walk across
many modern day
bridges. A rontosaurus
dinosaur a only plants
and is ca ed a 'her-
bivore'. The dinosaur is
often called he 'thunder
lizard' because of the
noise it was supposed to_
make as it travelled:
The Tyrannosaurus is
sometimes called the
'King of the Dinosaurs'.-
This
inosaurs'.This is because it would
attack even the largest
dinosaur. Its teeth were
like knives and its huge
jaws could rip apart any
creature that came in
path. It was shorter than
the Brontosaurus, only 50
feet long, and weighed
much less — a measley 6
to 8 tons. It stood on its
two hind feet and
balanced itself with its
strong tail.
The Struthiomimus
dinosaur bears a
resemblance to the
ostrich we know today.
Parts of the 'ostrich -
mimic' have been found
on Canada's Prairies.
This dinosaur had a beak
for eating fruit and in-
sects. Its very long legs
carried it quickly over
the flat land it lived on.

tax course
Keeping up with
changes can be
frustrating for farmers,
especially in the field of
income tax. To relieve
the wear and tear on their
nerves -at tax time,
farmers can take a farm
incpme tax course at
home.
The Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and d Food
sponsors a"`farm_income
tax correspondence
course through the
Independent Study
program at the
University of Guelph. It's
one of 60 home study
courses sponsored by the
ministry.
"The Farm Income
Tax course is revised
each year to keep far-
mers abreast of the new
tax regulations," says
Wendy Elrick of the
Independent Study office.
The farm income tax
course is available to
Ontario residents for $50
and to non-residents for
$60. Write the Office of

Dinosaurs were almost
everywhere in the world
when they were earth's
main animal. We know
this because their
remains have been found
everywhere except in the
Antarctic. Parts of
dinosaurs have been
preserved in rocks.
Scientists study these
'fossils' for more clues
about the Mesozoic Era.
Scientists aren't totally
sure why dinosaurs grew
to be so large. Some think
that the world during the
Mesozoic Era may have
been very warm and
moist, meaning that lots
of plants grew. The
dinosaurs that ate plants,
the herbivores,' would
have had plenty of
luscious plants to eat and
grow fat on.
Another mystery
surrounding dinosaurs is
their disappearance from
the face of the earth.
Scientists aren't exactly
sure why they died off,
but think that the weather
may have changed and
made earth less suitable
for these huge beasts.
Whatever the reason, you
won't see a dinosaur
walking down your
street.
