Atoms humiliated by Listowel 10-2
G&lerich Suncoast
Atoms hosted Listowel
Saturday and were
humiliated by their
guests 10-2: -
Listowel scored four
goals in the first period,
one in the second and
three in the third before
Exeter Panthers win junior
championship over Goderich
BYTD
The Exeter South
Huron Panthers won the
Huron -Perth Conference
junior football cham-
pionship with a close 15-14
victory over the GDCI
Vikings Saturday in
Exeter.
The Vikings started off
strongly in the first
quarter, marching 80
yards on 12 plays for a
touchdown on the first
offensive series of the
game.
Scott Kernigh4n,
starting his first game at
the tail back slot, went
over for the touchdown
from the Panther three
' yard line.
' Dave "Finn"
McDonald kicked the
convert , to give the
Vikings a 7-0 lead.
Exeter, failing to move
the ball inside, tried an
outside running attack in
the second quarter and
hit paydirt, driving 70
yards for a touchdown,
scored by Gary Spurn on
a six yard off -tackle run.
The convert was missed.
The Vikings raised
their lead to 8-6 before the
end of the half when an
attempted field goal was
wide but went for a single
point.
In the third quay r, the
Vikings gave up MI ball
on an unsuccessful third •
down gamble deep in
Panther territory, and
Exeter carne right back
with another long drive
which saw the fleet -
footed Spurn get his
second touchdown of the
day, this time on an eight
yard sweep. Spurn was on
the receiving end of a
two-point conversion pass
from quarterback Dave
Shaw.
The Vikings dug down
deep and drove back for a
touchdown mid -way
through the fourth
quarter. On a third and
five situation at the
Panther 20 yard line,
quarterback Dave
MacDonald threw a
strike to Andy Masse who
went over for the TD.
That tied the score at
14-14 and it stayed that
way when an attempted
two-point conversion pass
went incomplete.
With kess than three
minutes remaining in the
game, the Panthers
fooled the Vikings with a
second down quick -kick
by Dave Shaw that went
30 yards for a single and
proved to be the margin
of victory for Exeter.
Despite the loss in the
final game, the Vikings
could not really be
disappointed with their
season.
They began the year

with 29 rookies and only
five returning players,
and were not given much
of a chance of going
anywhere.
However, the team
showed remarkable
improvement as the
season went on. They
finished third in the
regular schedule, then'
upset second place
Stratford Northwestern
in the semi-finals and
came within an ace of
winning their second
straight championship
against Exeter.
Coaches Bruce Baker
and Bill Garrow both
expressed pride in their
'team.
As Baker put, it, "Last
year we won •it, but we
were supposed to. This
year we were not even
supposed to make the
playoffs, and we almost
won it again."
He credited team
captains Mike Wedlock,
David MacDonald, Dave
McDonald and Greg
Marshallwith providing
leadership throughout the
season.
Coach Garrow felt the
Goderich defence against
Exeter was the most
effective the Vikings had
played all year.
The defensive backs
prevented the long pass,
the corners and defensive
ends contained the sweep
after some initial dif-
ficulties and the interior
Line and linebackers,
even without the services
of Bob Austin who was
injured early in the
second half contained the
Panther's inside running.'
The Vikings will have
19 returning players next
season and both Garrow
and' Baker are already
looking forward to the
prospects of another fine
season.
Players moving up to
the senior Vikings include
'Larry Kelly, Scott
Kernighan, Rob Little.,
Dave MacDonald, Jim
MacDonald, Aaron
Masse, Andy Masse,
Dave McDonald, Carey
Muck, Rob Plunkett,
Scott Profit, Jamie
Rogers, Tom Smith,
Graham Suchard -and
Mike Wedlock.
