enough for Wingham to
overcome Goderich's 10.2

• Both the junior and
senior girls basketball
teams were eliminated
from further play in
sudden -death action here
last Thursday.
The junior Vikings, who
had finished in a five -way
tie for first place along
with the two Stratford
schools, Exeter and
Seaforth, wound up their
season by losing 33-30 in
overtime to Stratford
Central in a sudden -death
game which would put
the winner in first place
and eliminate the loser
from the playoffs.

As the result of a draw,
Northwestern finished
second, Exeter third and
Seaforth fourth.
The senior Vikings,
who had finished second
in the league standings
with a record of nine wins
and one loss, lost their
sudden -death semi-final
game in another
squeaker, 36-34 to Exeter.
Exeter had finished third
in the regular season.
Susan Marsh led
Stratford ^Central to
victory over the junior
Vikings with 13 points.
Three players, Heather
Minielly, Robin
MacDonald and Sharon
Lomas had six points
each for Goderich.
'Mona Gleason and
Barb Conlon added four
apiece and Teresa
Kovacs and Mary O'Neill
contributed two points
each.
The Vikings led
thrpugh most of the game
but lost momentum when
Teresa Kovacs was lost
through a knee injury.
The GDCI girls were
down by two points with
less than a minute
remaining in the game
but Heather Minielly
scored on a jump shot
with 10 seconds left to
force overtime.
Stratford got two
baskets in the three
minute overtime session
while the Vikings could
manage only one foul
shot. -
The senior Vikings also
led through most of their
game, but faded in the
-fourth quarter.
The Vikings led 19-15 at
half-time and were ahead
29-27 after three quarters.
Exeter outscored ' the
GDCI squad 9-5 in the
final quarter to upset
coach Donna Doidge's
crew.
Jenny More was the top
scorer for Goderich with
10 points.
Heidi Elliott got eight
and Bonnie Reid hit for
six poin{s.
Sonja Lapaine and
Karen Melady threw in
five points apiece.
Barb Riddell was the
game's top scorer, get-
ting 12 points for Exeter.
Mary Muller had nine
points for the winners.
The junior • Vikings
coach, John Geiger, felt
his team had a very
successful season and
with ten returnees for
next season, looks for-
ward to another good
team for next year.

period and added four
more in the first five
minutes of the third to
skate Iota 10-5 win. .
Mark Rowe started
Goderich scoring with
2:48 played in the game
gathering in a pass from
pave McDonald for a 1-0
lead. Just over three
minutes later Rick Stahl
set up Larry Boyce for a
2-0 lead.
Wingham awnsered
hack at the ten minute
mark when Bill Brophy
scored an unassisted goal
to cut the Goderich lead
in half.
Two minutes later
Rowe scored his second
of the night to give
Goderich a two goal edge
after one period of play.
Will Denomme gave
Goderich a three goal
cushion early in the third
but Wingham hung tough.
Holding Goderich at bay
for seven minutes
Wingham gut back in the
game on a goal by Dan
Nesbitt with four minutes
remaining in the second.
Those four minutes
proved disttstorous for
Wingham. Stahl put
Goderich back up by
three and wyth 21 seconds
eft in the period Boyce
got his second goal, what
proved to he the winner.
Goderich pumped in
another four goals in the
first five minutes of the

The Goderich Sailors
held off a last- minute
flurry by Wingham in
Intermediate C action
Friday night notching
their first win of the 1979-
80 campaign.
The Sailors scored
twice in the third period
to break a three goal tie
and used an empty net
goal with 38 seconds left
to nail down the 6-4 win in
Wingham. •
Wingham scored just
over a minute after the
opening face off to jump
to a one goal' lead. Ed
Williams gathered• in a
pass from Niel Bieman
and beat Sailor net -
minder Dennis
Fleischauer.
Wayne Rau evened
things up with 4:48 to play
in the period finishing off
a three way play with
Paul Rau and Ken Daer.
Ken Meriam , scooped
up a pass from Paul Kelly
at the start of the second
and put the Sailors ahead
for the first time. The
goal came with just five
seconds expired on the
clock.
Wingham evened
things five minutes later
when Dave Galley and
Murray Black set up
Grant Gnay. The tie
lasted until the midway
point of the period when
Dan, Duncan beat
Wingham netminder
Keith Elston to put the
Sailors up 3-2.
With just over seven
minutes left Rick
Jacklina evened things
up and the teams went to
the dressing room

into the third to put the
Sailors up one and with
eight minutes left Hen-
derson scored what stood
as the winner with help
from Scott Parks and
Rick Frcmlin.

Goderich overcame a
two goal deficit against
Lambeth. Down 2-0 with
33 seconds left in the first
Larry Daer pulled the
Stars to within one with
help from Mike Hodges
and Stuart Crew.
The Stars scored two'
unanswered goals in the
middle period" for a 3-2
lead and added two in the
third before Lambeth
scored again.
Just over a minute into
the second period Hodges
got the equalizer. on a
play started by Ken Reid.

third • Goderich goal
serving as middle man on
a three way scoring play.
Hodge took a pass from
Daer• and set Rob
McDonald ' up for
Goderich's third goal.
Daer got his second of
the night, the winner,
early in the third. Hodge
got his third assist on the
play started by Larry
Gaynor. Forty four
seconds later John
Clement sealed the win
with help from Steve
Lobb and Ken Reid.
The Stars went on a
scoring spree against
Strathroy Monday
scoring six times in the
second period to break a
scoreless tie and adding
another half-dozen in the
third for the 12-1 win.
Greg Hallam paced the
Stars attack with a four
goal effort. Hallam also
assisted on one goal.
Mike Hodges scored
one goal and added two
assists and Don Elliott
chipped in with two goals
and two assists, John
Clement scored twice for
the Stars and Bill Peters,
Rob McDonald and Larry
Daer added singles.
Peters was credited
with three assists and
Daer one. Doug
CFuickshank assisted on
three Goderich goals and
Roger Lewis and Steve
Lobb each were got
asists.
The. Stars ;travel to
Belmont Sunday and host-

Mustangs hand
Bears first loss

After a disappointing
loss on Friday night 8-6 to
the Wingham Ironmen,
the Mustangs travelled to
Port Elgin on Sunday and.
handed the Bears their
first loss of the season.
Greg Flowers put the
Stangs ahead at the first
minute mark of the
period and Port Elgin
tied it four minutes later
to end the period at one
apiece.
In the second period,
John Hart opened the
scoring, 'Again in the first
minute of play, before
Port Elgin stormed back
with two goals. Phil
Arthur tied the score for
the Stangs late in the
second period.
in the third period, the
Stangs opened up a two
goal lead with goals from
Dave Stephenson and
Phil Arthur before the
five minute mark. Port
Elgin scored midway
through the period to pull
within one goal before
Dave Stephenson notched
his second goal' of the
,period to give the Stangs
a two goal lead again.
In the final moments of
the game, Clinton was
handed a penalty and
Port Elgin scored to
make the score 6-5 but the
,Stangs held on for the
victory even though Port
Elgin lifted their
goaltender in favour of an
extra attacker.
Clinton goaltender
Gerry Gaynor played an
excellent game for the
Stangs stopping 42 shots.
