HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-11-15, Page 5Kick=off party set y seniors Members of the Steering Committee for MacKay Centre, ' for Seniors met in the mayor's office at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7 to finalize plans• for a "kick-off" party. This party will be held in MacKay 'Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28 and will mark the beginning of a fund raising campaign to help with renovations to MacKay Hall. The establishment of the MacKay Centre for Seniors was approved in principle by Goderich Town Council on November 5. The chairman of the committee thanked those who had taken part in the presentation to council and also those who had attended the meeting. Invitations to attend the November 28 party, will be sent to various organizations and service clubs. Mrs.. Dorothy Knights, Executive Director of the Windsor Centre for Seniors, has been asked to be guest speaker for the evening. The evening program :will begin with Open House at MacKay Hall from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m: This will be followed by a variety program and lunch. n h. There will also be time for a question and .answer period. Committees were- set up to make final arrangements for an interesting and en- tertaining evening. In preparation for establishing - the centre for seniors, 'sub- committee chairmen were appointed. Jim Magee will, act as chairman of the Building\ Committee; Ellen Smith and Bea Snarling will be co=convenors of the Membership Committee; and Dave Harman will be chairman of the Government Committee which will write the constitution and by-laws. The 'chairman of the Fund Raising committee will be named later as will members of the above committees. Ken Hunter and Everett Snarling plan to attend meetings of Colborne and Goderich Township Councils in November to present plans for the MacKay Centre for Seniors to those councils. Several people who have been working on the steering committee for the Centre will speak to the public on Channel 12 TV at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21. ...,. The next meeting of the steering committee will be held in the mayor's office at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27. This vehicle was completely destroyed after hitting a tree and catching fire at the corner of Caledonia Crescent and Waterloo Street at approximately 1:48 a.m. on November 11. The driver was taken to Alexandra Marine and General Hospital. Police are still investigating. (Photo by Dave Muffitt) Thefts on rise in Goderich Goderich Police report a fairly busy week from November 6 to 13. Several more—bikes were stolen during the week. A cassette player, some tapes and a CB radio were also stolen in three separate thefts from vehicles in three different areas of town. Police are still in- vestigating. A break-in occurred at the Goderich Fina Station on Bayfield Road. on November 8. Approximately $40 was taken from the cash register. Police are still investigating. Also on the evening of November 8 police were called to the harbor where the third mate on the freighter Ontadoc had caught his glove in. the. hatch cover roller. He was rushed by am- bulance to Alexandra Marine and General hospital with a severed finger. ' At 1:10 a.m. on November 9, a hit and run occurred when a cadillac parked outside the Club Grill restaurant on Kingston Street was struck by another car receiving approximately $400 damage. Police are looking for a suspect car believed .to be light green in color. At 2:40 a.m. the same morning, two Goderich police officers checked a vehicle and arrested the driver from London who had two flags in his possession from Goderich's Jubilee Park on Huron Road. Then at. 3:.30 a.m. that morning, police discovered a break and enter at the Huron Sunoco Station at the Five Points. Money was taken from the cash register. Two people have been arrested and charges laid. On November 10 two stop signs and some mailboxes were knocked over. People are urged to call police immediately if. At 5:10 p.m. on November 11, a car skidded into the path of another car at the en- trance to the Suncoast Mall on Bayfield Road. The vehicles were both destroyed and two people were injured. On the night of November 11 ap- proximately $2,000 worth of tools were stolen from a truck. Police Chief Pat Ring would once again remind people to lock their vehicles, even in their driveways. Install new officers At the last meeting in October, the officers of Goderich Rebekah Lodge No. 89 were very capably installed by D.D.P. Sister Jean Henderson and her installing a n team from the CI'inton Lodge. Rebekah Lodge had the Clinton Lodge as their guests. The soloist for the in- stalling team, Sister Cletta Holland, sang three beautiful pieces, May God Bless and Keep You, No Man Is An Island and Each Step I Take. In concluding the in- stallation,the team gave a .very appropriate' drill. using the carnation as its flower, this .being the Assembly President's flower for the year. At the conclusion of the drill, the carnations were . gathered and presented to the 1979-80 Noble ' Grand Sister, Joy Smith. When Ron Hodges of Goderich travelled to Montreal last week to see the Montreal Canadiens in hockey action, he was thinking of his friend, Marty Buchanan, also of Goderich, an avid Montreal Canadien fan. After the game, Ron waited an hour and a half, nearly missing his bus, to obtain Guy La Fleur's autograph for Marty. He presented him with the. autograph on Sunday during a hockey game at the Goderich arena.
