BY KATHRYN MACKAY
Every morni g of
every day Daniel's
mother would groan and
say, "Eat your pbrridge
and sit up straight, hurry
up or you'll be late.
Daniel Daniel, eat it all,
how do you think you'll
grow up tall? Hurry up.
and stop your dreaming,
eat, it up - what are you
scheming?"
And Daniel Dong knew
it was wrong to smile at
his thought. His mother
might just guess about
the ticket he had bought.
A ticket to the country -
(his mother talked and
talked) - where was it? -
he remembered - safe in
his locker locked.
I'll have to run all the
way to get to school on
time. Oh dear, I'd better
hurry, or else be caught
in line. Then they'd know
that I was here, and then
they'd know I wasn't, and
then they'd phone my
mother and say what a
nice boy doesn't. They
would know the ticket
was in the locker locked.
Even the teacher's wart
would be a trifle shocked.
"How could you do this
Daniel Dong?" Miss Wart
talked through her nose. I
would sit and wonder how
the hair in that wart
grows_
"I found it very easy to
go and buy a ticket. I got
it at the corner store from
a person at a wicket."
Miss Wart would
wheeze and huff and puff,
her nose would give a
snort. She'd struggle
hard to catch her breath -
she was fat and she was
short. Just because it
bothered her I'd balance
on my chair. And just
because it bothered her
I'd stare right at that
hair. She'd lurch towards
my leaning chair and fix
it with a jerk. I'd laugh
for in my scheming mind
another plan would lurk.
I'd stand and take the
ticket - the one bought at
the store - I'd• walk, I'd
pause, I'd turn around at
the classroom door. The
moment of my glop, - a
moment to be seen - all
the eyes would show
surprise - against the
door I'd lean. I'd click my
heels and leave the room,
the class would stare and
gasp `ORO' They saw
Miss Wart get ready to
zoom - though she was.
fat, boy could she go.
"Dong Dong," she'd
yell and chase and I
would run from her
puffing face. She'd follow
me into the street and
every passerby we'd
meet would think Miss
Wart escaped a zoo - if
you saw her, wouldn't
you? Flapping her .arms
and screeching "Dong -
I'll catch you yet, it won't
be long. DONG DONG.
Daniel Dong!" (A very
strange sort of song.)
I'd run and run and
catch the train and she
would yell "DONG"
again. As she saw me
