with Martha
Are you a fisherman or
-just a yarner? This
brings up a wide open
subject. The part 1 like
hest is the yarnin! We
seem to have lost
something in the fishin'
and yarnin' bit - those
that are fishing are so
intent and there arg very
few people who sit around
just for the fun of
swapping stories. The fun
seems to have gone out of
the fishing and in many
cases the fish have gone
out too.
I remember years ago
when at the drop of a hat
a young fellow would sing
that good Newfie (as they
called it) song - "On the
Squid Jiggin Grounds".
We know nothing uhout
squid, but one time a good
friend sort of took the
sung apart and
1(duced nle't() the art of
squid jigging. He twos so
good at it, I could just see
all these people lined
along the wharf, some
standing up staid then,
some lying down, most of
them) talking a mile a
minute' because at that
time and place that was
what it was all about.
At a certain time of the
(lay - or night the little
-child creatures would
appear where yeti had a
chance to catch some of
them. You all kni)w what
Squids are Good - now
,1'11 go on and tell you the
story about the fun that's
to be had.- providing you
don't get a squirt in the
eye with' ink from the
little devils. • ,. '
Now, this is the place
where the fishermen
gaiher in c)1lfikins and
boots . and Cape -Anes
battened down, (that's
.something to do with your
hat 1. All sizes and figures
with squid lines and
jiggers - they congregate
here on the squid ,jiggin
grounds. The "Here" is
on the east coast with
wind,' rain and - you'd
better pay attention or
you'll lose the picture.
Some are workin' their
jiggers while others are
yarnin. There's same
stundin' up and ther•es
sonie (yin' down, while all
kinds of fun, jokes and
tricks begin as they wait
for the 'squid on th,e squid
jigging ground.
1'11 skip a few verses,
because this goes on and
on and a lot of names of
folks we don't know are
mentioned and 'by now
the first squid has been
jigged and Holy smoke'
what a scuffle its a
wonder to me that there's
nobody drowned.
Says Bobby, "The
squids are on top of the
water - I just got me
:jiggers 'bout' one fathom
down! But a squid in the
boat squirted right down -
his throat and he's
swearin' like mad On the
squid jiggin ground, - one
poor little by( boy got it
right in the eye but they
don't give a darn on the
squid jiggin ground.
Now. if ever you feel
that you'd like., to go
squidding, Leave your
white shirts and collars
behind in the town. And if
you get cranky without
your silk hanky - you'd
better stay clearof the
squid jiggin' ground!
1 know that this little
song - LITTLE? - it goes
on for many verses!
Anyway, this song brings
Martha Rathburn
back memories of neatly'
happy tinges, lots of
-laugliti.r and good
fellowship - 1 ant dirty to
say they gel fewer every
year.
But this is normal.
There is a point in V011t'
life where you SHOULD
have furl sing and dance
and do 54 )11 yarnin',
' Plitnned- parties .5('('11) to
' take „Over after that - not
nearly. as 01uch fun then
these fade away to
special events Only and
by now you're so darned
hiisy With your little life
that you begin to get
away from 'the fun stuff
alltugethct•. i4Ttrst be more
sedate!
Then, snrlleofie of the
111(1 gang manages to get
everyone out fur a bir
thclay 'or special party
and the old• party fun is
revised and everyone has
a wonderful time.
-Why don't . we (14): thiS
more often - just what
\''e'rt.' doing 14inite:' Gee
but it's great to get
together again - w•hy.do`
we only 'do it note and
then? We ntitke each

each tither sing and you

good thing.
And it is true. Luckily
we have had enough good
get togethers to last a
lifetime The memories
never get stale - s)rilc'nne
is always bringing up 0
"reminder" and you can
laugh uhou1'11 again,
For example - the other
night we Saw Al C.herney
playing the violin, really
ripping -off' a good
hoedown - and we started
to laugh. Walt and I had
instant recall of a night
when one of our friends'
mother took the,;;:ji•iolin
away from the chap in the
orchestra. who -had been
playing sec -saw Stuff and
before he could grab it
away from her, she was
r:(•ally staking that fiddle
talk. Everyone stopped to
hear her as she 1•ippt41
into 0 fast ,jig with catgut
flying every which way!
honestly, it was SO
funny • if you could just
have seen the look on the
fe'llow's face as she
handed back the violin
with strings hanging all
around it = but she -surely
made that fiddle 'hippy
for a few minutes. A
collection was taken up to
buy him 11 new bow' but 50
or fi0 ...people will
remember that night with
a smile for many. many
years.
So we feel we are lucky
to have so many good

friends, so many good
memories as we slow
down. Life is so short yuti
have to lite each day to
the hest of your ability.
Happy memories are
your only way... to hold
back a day or night - so
mike the most of them.
Even a. c(ild, tiliserahle
clay will have its bit of
laughter - THAT is the bit
you hold onto,
So, get your bits and
pieces together and he
happy you are able to do
it. If you don; t use your
happy' bits ydu will lose
them. Keep warming
them up, remember .your
Old friends and be glad
they remember YOU.
