On the last play of the game, with the outcome already decided, Brian Mercer got behind the Viking defensive b-ac-ks, gathered in a pass from Bogart and went 106 yards for the Panthers' second touchdown. The Vikings' cham- pionship victory followed an undefeated regular season but unlike last year's Viking team's easy victories (they scored 400 points and gave up none), this year's team had to extend themselves to remain undefeated. The Vikings had two close games, 16- 12 over Stratford Central and 13-9 • over Exeter during the regular season. This season was, therefore, much more of a challenge to coaches Donnelly and Chris Connor and the- Vikings. They had a double-edged problem of convincing the 'returnees that they Still had something to prove and convincing the new players they could live up to the precedent set by last year's team. The shortness of the season, restricted to four regular -season games, -compounded the problem. Donnelly credited his team captains, Randy Little, Dennis Donnelly ,\ Ben Worrell and Eric Mitchell with providing the leadership which brought the team together in practices during the past wek to prepare for the cham- pionship game. The Vikings wile lose ten players -through graduation this year, and Donnelly was quick to point out the contribution of each of theseplayers. The Vikes will meet the South 'Huron Panthers in the conference final in Exeter Saturday at, 1.30 p.m. The win had to be considered an upset by the Vikings after losing handily to Stratford earlier in the season. Aaron Masse scored the lone Viking touchdown on a three -yard run and Dave MacDonald added the convert. Rob Plunkett completed the scoring with two singles. • Stratford was held to a single point in the first • -half and --scored their touchdown in the third quarter on a 60 yard pass and run play. A two-point conversion attempt failed. In the only meeting between the two finalsits this year, Exeter came from behind to edge Goderich 14-13 in the final minute of play. Owen Sound trips Gee Gees 76-62 The Goderich Gee Gees lost a tough game to Owen Sound last Friday night. Poorly defined boundaries • and a lower than average ceiling, cost Goderich several key turnovers and continually detracted from the game's momentum. Dave Ross . 'and Bill Gauley led Goderich with 16 points each, followed by Warren Watt with 14, Greg Beacom, Greg Smith' and Dennis Dowhaniuk had eight, seven and one point respectively.
