GODERICH SIGNAL-STAR,THU-RSDAYNOVEMBER 1,1979 -PAGE 13 MacDonald dominated chess club The big news this week is sad news for the Goderich Chess Club. Charlie MacDonald has left the Goderich Chess Club to move to Toronto to accept a promotion in his work. We are certainly •happy for Charlie having received a substantial promotion but he will be missed by the Chess Club. Charlie started with the Goderich Chess Club in its very first week eight years ago. He has been a regular member ever since. Charlie's skill in chess has been a huge challenge and an •in- spiration for all. He ran up an incredible record of 199 wins against five losses in regular season play. He also won 28 playoff games. Charlie went two consecutive years without a loss and had three undefeated seasons. Charlie also organized the Chess Club's first out of town tournament against Kincardine. We have all heard of gracious losers; but Charlie was a gracious winner. Even though he won 98 percent of his games he had an attitude that made his opponents feel proud of their game, even in losing. Even though we will have a different cham- pion for the first time we all would sooner have Charlie present to at- tempt the near im- possible and try to win against him for the championship, We wish at this time to congratulate and wish good luck to Charlie in his new position. The Goderich Chess Club had a cake in honor of Charlie and presented him with an engraved bracelet from the membership last week. In other Chess Club news Doug Brindley went (Photo by Barry Page) Charlie MacDonald of Sunset Golf with 11-2 and 6-4 victories. Sunset rebounded from the losses with an 8-5 win over Whetstone Jewellers in the other game.
