The Sailors now have a tie in their first two league games' after dropping the opener 2-1 to Fergus last week. The game was a hard- hitting affair and the lead changed hands several times before the Sailors' Jim Hayter banged in a pass from Rick Fremlin with 3.41 remaining in the game to salvage a point for Goderich. The -Sailors took a quick two -goal lead midway through the opening period as Fremlin and 'paul Kelly scored within the span of a minute. The Monarchs narrowed the margin to a single goal late in the first., period on a power play effort. The Monarchs then outscored Goderich 3-2 in the second period to tie the game 4-4 headin into the final period. Dan Duncan and Sowerby scored second period goals for the Sailors while Bill Ped- digrew scored twice for Mildmay. Mildmay took the lead with five minutes remaining in the game as Steve Lehman beat Bob Hnatyk in the Sailor's goal. Hayter evened things up for Goderich less than two minutes later with the tying goal. Several penalties were handed out in the game and Goderich was nailed for 11 two -minute minors, a five minute high sticking penalty and a 10 minute misconduct. Mildmay was assessed 10 minors and two 10 -minute misconducts. The Sailors return to action`this.Friday against Harriston at the Goderich and District Community Centre. (photo by Dave Sykes) Carnival contest extended The board off the Goderich Figure Skating Club met on Oct 25 with Merchants split games The Goderich Mer- chants split a pair of games in Intermediate C league action last week losing 7-5 to Centralia College and defeating Gram Bend 4-1 Friday. The split leaves the Merchants with a record of two' wins and one loss in the. South Huron Hockey League. In Huron Park on 'October 17 Centralia College avenged a 7-3 loss to the Merchants in the first game of the schedule with a six -goal outburst in the final two periods to clinch a 7-5 victory. The teams exchanged single goals in the first period with Tom O'Brien scoring for Goderich from .Greg Hansen. Centralia tied the game just before the end of the first period. The Merchants jumped into a quick two -goal lead early in the second period as Bill Wedlock scored from Rob Standen and Cam MacDonald and O'Brien scored his second goal of the game on the power play to boost Goderich into a 3-1 lead. Centralia quickly erased the two -goal deficit scoring twice in the span of 23 seconds to Bridge Club scores ^ Jean Cook and Verna Worthy combined for a point total of. -981 ,to head -- the competition in the North-South section. of play at the October 30 meeting of the Goderich Bridge Club. Centralia continued on `that offensive note in the final period with Rick Vanos scoring on an unassisted effort three minutes into the period to lift Centralia into a two- goal lead. The Junior Vikings won by a 40-9 score, led by Mona Gleason's 12 points. Coach John Geiger's Vikings now have a 7-1 won -lost record. The Senior Vikings won 95-19 over St. Marys, boosting their first place record to eight wins and no losses. The Junior Vikings took part in a tournament last weekend at Grand` River Collegiate in Kitchener, reaching the consolation finals, but losing 98-32 to the host Grand River team. The Vikings were deadlocked in a 28-28 tie at the end of the third quarter in the consolation final but a fourth quarter surge gave Kitchener the victory. • Robin MacDonald, who was chosen to the lour- nament all-star team, scored 16 points for the Vikings against Grand River. The Vikings were relegated to the . con- solation round by a close 45-42 loss to St. Marys of Kitchener in their opening game. The game went into overtime but two missed foul shots in the closing minute foiled a valiant Viking comeback after fouls had put them in trouble earlier in the overtime. Heather • Minielly with 16 po.ints and Robin MacDonald with 15, were tops for the Vikings. The Vikings had .an isasy ttrn-e of it in The- Bridge he and Heather Minielly added 13 for Goderich. The senior Vikings were led to victory over St. Marys by Marg Conlon's 10 points. Gee Gees win The Goderich Gee Gee's opened the Lakeshore Intermediate Basketball League with arch rivals - Owen Sound coming to town. The Double G's were able to hold onto a slim three- point'.edge and chalk up their first victory 52-49. • Goderich was led by high scoring Greg Beacom who netted 16 points. Other Goderich scorers were Warren Watt, 11 points; Dave Ross, seven points; Greg Smith, six points, Jeff Buechler, three points and Bill Gauley two points, Defensively Perry '1'eichert stole the show coming up with key steals to preserve the win late in the game. He also chipped in with seven points,. The Gee Gee's go into action again Friday, Nov. 2 in Owen Sound.
