The students were divided into special groups and spent the day learning lifestyle, games, homes and foods of kids in other lands. This group of kindergarten, Grade 4 and Grade 8 students got some insight into how the Chinese build their houses. (photo by Jeff Seddon) Open A cheery tire in the fireplace welcomed visitors to an Open House at Knox United Church manse last Sunday af- ternoon, October 28. Members of the congregation were welcomed at the door by Mr. 'and Mrs. Richard Hawley and invited to tour the house. Pouring ,tea for the occasion were Mrs. Kenneth McDougall and Mrs. Hilliard_ Jefferson. The members of the United Church Women, Mrs. Barry Millian, Mrs. Stuart Chamney, Mrs. Peter Verbeek, Mrs. Gerald McDowell, Mrs. Ted Robinson" and Mrs. Tom Jardin worked behind -the -scenes in the kitchen.' A pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all who attended. U.C.W. On October 24 at noon, members of Unit One of Knox United Church Women, arrived at the church ith their guests to enjo a bountiful pot- luck -dinner. Mrs. Donald Haines and Mrs. Tom Jardin welcomed the guests. Mrs. Lawrence Plaetzer, Mrs. Stanley Ball and Mrs. Harold Gross were responsible for the dinner preparations. Nearly 40 were present. Following the dinner, Mrs. Maurice Bean read a poem, How Old Are You? Those present sang ' Happy Birthday to Mrs. Jessie Naylor and all signed a card for her as well as a. get -well card for William J. Craig who had planned to be one of the guests. While the members retired to the kitchen for . the business part of the meeting and the dishes, the guests gathered around theInterest Table with Mrs. Dorothy Grange and Mrs. Richard Hawley in charge. They enjoyed seeing the various items brought by everyone which included a lovely afghan, an old picture of the members of the Auburn Rifle Club and a Canadian Citizenship certificate, to name only a few. Everyone took part in the sing -song led by Mrs. Richard Hawley with Mrs. Barry Millian at the piano. Gerry and Annette Bere moved from Goderich to their new home in Port Albert on Saturday. The Hallowe'en dance at Agriculture Hall on Saturday evening was well attended. Fred and Betty Stirling and family of Thamesville spent the weekend with her parents, Bob and Elsie Irvin. Mrs. Marietta Fennel (Stingel) of Bradford and brother, Franklin of Calgary, Alberta dropped in to Eedy's store on Saturday afternoon. While visiting in Goderich and being this close to the old home grounds, they thought they would see what things looked like after a few years away. Sympathy is ext9nded to Laura King and Elmer Cook on the passing of their grand- mother, Mrs. Harry Powell in Goderich on Tuesday. The funeral was held on Friday. Craig is a patient in Alexandra Marine and General hospital, Goderich. 4-H NEWS The Auburn 4-.H club; "Up in Stitches", held its fourth meeting at the home of Mrs. John .Hildebrand. The meeting was opened with all members repeating the pledge, followed by the minutes read by Diane Hanna. The members were shown their last • two samplers stitches - the cashmere and the cross stitch. The girls found the stitches most attractive and enjoyed getting to work on them. The seniors were also shown a background filler stitch called the Brick stitch. With Achievement Day so close, the girls discussed plans for their needlepoint display. A.C.W. St. Mark's Anglican Church Women met for their October meeting at the home of Mrs. Tom Lawlor who. presided for the meeting and welcomed. all. The meeting was-- ppenud by reading the hymn, Come Ye Thankful People Come, followed by prayers by Mrs. Andrew R1rkconnell. The scripture lesson, from St. John 20; verses 19 to 31 was read and the Invocation was given by -Mrs. Law.-ltirr.:, The meditation from the Living Message was read by all the members. A reading, Magic in a Pension, was read by Mrs. Tom Haggitt, and another reading, Each" Day, was read by Mrs, Lillian Letherland. • President, Mrs. Donald Cartwright took charge of the business part. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as read by the secretary,.. Mrs. John Daer. The financial statement was accepted as given by the treasurer, Mrs. Tom Haggitt. Correspondence was read and cards of thanks also read. The invitation ,to attend the Knox U.C.W. meeting was accelited and, plans were made to cater to the dinner for the Auburn and District Lions Club on November 21. The roll call was an- swered by a Bible verse containing the word, Thanksgiving.. The autumn Thankoffering meeting of Knox United Church Women was held last urn to page 20 • reading by Miss Beth Mc- Connell and a solo by Mrs. Russel Alton. Mrs. Wilma Clark thanked the ladies for the program and "Happy Birthday" was sung by all. Lunch of fruit juice and birthday cake was enjoyed while visiting with friends. DUNGANNON UNITED CHURCH Rev. Ian Mackay of Sprucedale United Church in Chatham was guest minister' on Sunday morning, speak-, ing on, "The Obligation of Acceptance". Miss Helen El- liott sang a solo, "Whisper- ing Hope" and the choir sang, "Jesus is the man who cares for others", led by organist, Mrs. Jean Elliott. Thanks is extended to Dungannon U.C.W. who contributed 40 new hymn books which were in the pews on Sunday. Choir practice is Th•ursdaji' evening this week because of Hallowe'en- ,Mrs. Elliott would like to start practising for Music Night and for the special Christmas services. CHRISTLAN FELLOWSHIP CHURCH About 90 people gathered in the Brookside School gym on Thursday evening to take part, in the self-help pro- gram, sponsored by the Mennonite Central Commit- tee and in charge off Mrs. Shirley Martin from Listow- el. The evening's event was opened by Ruth Johnston, president of the Christian Fellowship Women's group, who led the assembly in a song, "He's Got the Whole World in His. Hands". This was followed by a brief scripture reading by Marion Lawrence. Mrs. Martin then showed a filmstrip which depicted workers in various countries of the world, and all money being sent to the producers, which helps to provide food, shelter, educa- tion medical help and self- respect. Some of the places which were represented by the extensive display of hand- crafts were Haiti, Africa, Philippines, Bethlehem and northern Canada. Thirteen hundred dollars was taken in from the sale off these crafts. Tea was served as the buyers were viewing and buying goods and visita- tion was enjoyed by the men and women who Game from at least six different church groups.
